Plan is north FT Worth, south Dallas, stop between Huntsville and College Station, south Houston. Japan started the bullet train due to small mountainous island. Many use it to access spa vacations as well as business. Japan bullet train infrastructure cost total 16T$. Germany has one HS track from Denmark to Frankfurt A Main. That track is shared with 'milk runs' trains (slow) between small towns. Major vacation travel means. Both countries the majority of population owning auto have just a small commuter type.
All use overhead wires from localized power stations. Plan is for elevated tracks like Seattle skytrain. Track and wire maintenance $ will be exhorbatant. Gotta put in a road for maintenance and outage disables any traffic. No big deal for freight but passengers will get ticked when it stops on the track for hours in 100F or 20F weather. Much less a tornado.
Expect your elec bill to tripple to make the power generating stations that run on GAS.

And why do we need this? Is there really that much commuter traffic between Houston and Dallas?

I see a huge waste of time, money and resources.
There is quite a lot. I wish there was better rail commuter infrastructure along the IH35 corridor. Lessen traffic and you don't have to drive (i.e. I can look around or nap)

I have friends that live in Buffalo. The stories they have told me about the bullying the train company has done is unreal. They are suing land owners into selling there property. Splitting land so that the land owner has to drive miles to get to a crossing to get to the back side of his land.

I think it would take a better man than me to not have an oopsy where the rails got damaged.

And Amtrak has a special squad of people that their job is to go out and clean up the mess after someone jumps in front of a train. Happens pretty frequently.

Not just Amtrak, freight trains too

I'm sure that's true. But I think most of the Amtrak ones occur in the Northeast corridor when they run through heavily populated areas. I think they have more issues in those parts of the system than in the other areas.

All these gov contracts require 33% of the money to go to historically underutilized, woman owned, minority, etc businesses.

The US DOT has a traveling road show to get women business owners to bid, then subcontract things to someone who knows how.

    ...

Not just the DOT (of course). Let's just say I have some first-hand experience working for a company, that sub-contracts to another company, that is contracted by some department that is in the business of breaking things.

The intermediate sub is woman owned. I'm not privy to all of the levels of sub-sub-sub in the particular situation I'm in, but I'm going to guess no small amount of money is siphoned off between me (getting paid) and the Federal budget line-item that is the ultimate source of the money.

So.. yeah.. they re-sub it to us expendable male types that know how to get the objective accomplished, all while singing the praises of great non-male owned business "success".

Back in the 80s, Southwest ran flights from Dallas to Houston for $69....people would take a hop from one to the other for the weekend. Of course, those were in the days when you could show up at the gate 5 min before it pushed back...not the 1.5 hr TSA nightmare we have now.
Trains work in Europe and Japan because they have the infrastructure to support you once you get off the train. Take the high speed into Frankfurt and get on the local trains to get where you're going in town...or ride a bus. I don't think Dallas or Houston is really set up for that.

Supercollider was pretty much done when I applied for work there.
Rode the train in Germany (work related trip), milk run between small towns. Did take the 'bullet' train but it was regulated slow due the major wreck they had. Took the DART to visit buddy at VA hosp., bunch of muggers on board and severely crowded on rush-hour trip back. Some guy did give me a seat that I promptly gave to a pregnant lady. Guy I was with wanted to carry but VA doesn't allow it. Oh, yea, pot smokers on board downtown that just waiting for you to object so they can bust you one. Yea, I've ridden NYC subways, long time ago but not now. Didn't ride buses in Soul but subway and busses the only way for most to get around and out to where they live.
Not the Autobahn but the chunnel train where you drive on and get transported.
I rode the NY subways when I was a kid too, but I rode on the safe area, between cars, not in them.

So Texas Central exercised options to buy property before funding was acquired (against law in bill) then sold property to Japanese company. And is seeking Fed $ at the same time! Deal STINKS.

In the DC Metro area - Northern VA, DC, and MD - the dirty little secret about the "minority set asides" is that when the minority owned business get near the end of its window (five years I think), they "sell" the business to someone else in the family and bid as a "new" minority owned business. That is, instead of competing with other businesses with their newly gained government contract expertise, they get to bid on the set asides for another five years.

That is why there were businesses that won government contracts in the name of a three year old.

They think 290 is a NASCAR race but without the pesky rules and safety regulations.

That sounds like chicanery and tomfoolery to me.....surely that kind of stuff is not allowed in our government contracting is it ?
