A question out of curiosity, that you may or may not know the answer to. How could he tell by looking that the weapons had been illegally modified?

Its usually easy to tell if you are familar with the firearms in question, and have a basic understanding of NFA regulations

In the last couple outings to the range I have seen too many new shooters that obviously had never touched a gun before.
    1. Guy trying to clear a jam with his finger on the trigger.
    2. Husband and wife with their new AR that went through many magazines without hitting the target at 15yds. As a bonus the wife was somehow shooting the track that the target rides on.
    3. Guy sighting in his new 308 bolt gun on a 25yrd range. He had it resting on his range bag and I laughed to myself as I saw the end of the barrel moving all over the place.
    Stay safe out there.

Saw this at the range today. I report only, I will not make any comments on what I thought about his range etiquette, I'll leave the comments to you.

Too bad I did not have my phone ready when he was handling his pistol grip only shotgun earlier; that he unloaded live rounds from while pointing it at the road behind the firing line (the exact opposite direction from down range) where folks had their vehicles parked.

Allow me to say, I made that video and left post haste. I usually only go to that range only on weekdays because it is much more likely I'll be the only shooter there on a weekday. Broke my own rule today by going on a Saturday.

Ar15 with a singlepoint sling, hooked to the front of the handguard, muzzle pointed at his head

People asking if we rent firearms, and if so, do they "Have to shoot them on our range?"

People (trying to) walk down on a hot range, get mad at me when i yell at them to not do that

These kind of things makes you want to avoid the ranges, kinda like going to Wal-Mart.
Kinda depends on the range. There are two main outdoor ranges in the Midland/Odessa area. I at first was a member of Odessa Outdoors, I liked it because it was closer, but soon found that many people were very rude and at times unsafe. I even had one guy accuse me of shooting after ceasefire, and he was the one that did the shooting.

I now belong to Midland Shooter's Association, and I haven't seen any rudeness or accusations from any. Plus, it has more shaded areas.

I went to the Odessa “range” twice. The last time I was there, it was just a big pit that the rock crusher left behind when they left. No formal shooting areas, and certainly no safety rules. I was out there when the lady caught a ricochet In her chest. That round was fired from across the “range” and between the other shooters and their targets. I joined MSA the following week and never regretted it.

Ugh - a few years ago I had to disarm a couple of young men that were shooting their brand new Mossberg 500 pistol grip Cruiser a couple of benches to my left. I asked the Range Master to correct their muzzle management and he did. That only lasted while he was directly supervising. 10 minutes of grab-ass and giggling later they were back to pointing that thing everywhere but down range. I asked them if I could see their gun, they said sure. I racked it until the tube was empty, walked down the line and handed it to the Range Master. He asked those gents to leave.

About a month or two back at the indoor range, I had a bay about to myself for a while which was great. Old man comes in with a pump action shotgun, and this guy was probably 5'5" and pushing 120 - a small guy. Launched one slug down range and it blew him back a few steps. Wasn't stoked to be right next to him. Fortunately (?), he couldn't seem to rack it by himself, so a range officer helped him figure things out. Pretty sure he paid $20 to fire about 3 shots before leaving. Maybe he was just efficient. Maybe he was in over his head.

Small "blasting" bay for shotguns with birdshot, had a group magdump their AK there. Counted 8 spots where some 7.62x39 fell way short, and the backstop to this bay is only like 10 yards out.

Had a guy argue with me that he should be able to do whatever he wants because "it's ok I'm leaving"

Random guy "Are you the RSO?"

Me "Yes sir, what can i hel-"

Random guy "well i am an NRA certified RANGE MASTER so what i say goes"

Me "that's not how this works sir, you have to follow our rules, if you have any concer-"

Random guy "this is unacceptable, the NRA will be hearing about this"

I guess he'll leave out the parts about pointing a gun at me in his report to the NRA

Few years ago I was at carter's country, before I got my membership at BASC in crosby. Guy at the bench next to me had a 1-4x power scope mounted backward on an AR.

Struggling to look thru the scope. He asked me for help. Luckily it was a quick disconnect mount, he flipped it around and shot a few mags with the scope now swung really far toward the stock. HORRIBLE eye relief. He shot maybe 1 mag and left.

Went to gun range in Dallas for my friend's bachelor party. We are all having a good time shooting guns. Turns out in the next lane over there are some guys who clearly are shooting for the first time. They rented two handguns and an AR-15. These people are trying to load the AR and they look like a couple of monkeys doing a math problem. They walk up to me and ask me how to work the AR. I show them how to load the rifle like I am explaining it to a very small child. I then see him try to load 9mm ammo into the magazine of the 45 caliber pistol. I have to point out his mistake to him. At this point I am wondering how stupid are these guys and that they clearly lied about their firearm experience on the range's safety wavier.

Punchline to the whole story is they are not from Texas. They are tourists from New York City.
When I worked at Shell, I had a couple of Yankees ask if I thought .375 H&H magnum was a good cartridge for hunting in Texas - they meant white tail deer.
