Finally checked at the right time and found the Oculus Rift S in stock. Should be at my house Friday evening.

Plan on using it to make my sim style air combat games a lot more fun. War Thunder should work very well, Rise of Flight seems like to be better suited for monitors and head tracking but I’m gonna give it a try. I’ve also got DCS which wasn’t great on a fixed screen but hopefully VR makes it worth the effort to learn.

I plan to pick up Fallout 4 and Blade and Sorcery. Any other good FPS or sims I should put on the list?

DCS World is great with an Oculus, and isn't bad with a flat screen if you use trackir or something similar. VR makes it next level though.

I’ve only flown the 2 freebie planes. Enjoyed the civilian P-51 but jets don’t interest me much. At the time the P47 wasn’t available for download so I stuck with the basics.

Took a couple tries before I could get through the simple engine start procedures without checking the manual. I got bored fairly quick flying in circles with no machine guns or enemies though. And without head tracking it’s a PITA to look around.

    The details are amazing though.

Yeah trackir or some other method of head tracking is extremely needed, the game is cumbersome at best without it. Rift really gives the impression of depth and scale to the environment. There's some good online groups of people that play DCS. Anything from aerobatic teams like the virtual vultures and virtual Thunderbirds, to the online combat groups running missions and sorties

I have more fun with air combat than anything else.

Started out on Rise of Flight but there are only about 20 active members on the servers and it suffers from the same issue as DCS. You really need some sort of head tracking. It has some VR support but it’s not very well done from what I’ve read since support ended before VR really started gaining steam.

War Thunder is a lot of fun and has great VR support, but it’s also built for non VR players so running VR with a joystick and throttle actually puts you at a bit of a disadvantage in many of the game modes outside of simulator. And even in Simulator mouse aim has been implemented well enough to still off some advantages. But the realism does more for me than slightly easier kills.

I’ve watched a few YT vids on WW2 bomber escort missions in DCS and they look like a lot of fun.

You'd enjoy the online combat. There's people who do organized missions with air and ground targets to strike, and there's also organized air on air combat with really players or AIs. There's also Falcon BMS for more realistic combat sims

    Got my Rift today.

Went through all the tutorial stuff and was blown away. Then decided to throw caution (and all advice about getting “VR legs”) to the wind and jump in to War Thunder. First first couple of rolls and loops were a little disorienting but wasn’t long before I was more interested in the gauges and watching the control surfaces in the wings that my personal comfort.

Gunned down a few AI fighters, then went in to another game mode online and gunned down multiple waves of AI bombers with with strangers. Didn’t try going head to head with humans yet.

    Hope to try DCS tomorrow.

The BMF game looks like a real pain to get installed so I’ll probably stick with WT and maybe DCS.

Elite Dangerous looks amazing in VR but is somewhat grindy. Arizona Sunshine was ok for a zombie shooter. I've heard lots of great things about Halflife: Alyx too.

If Robo Recall still comes with the Rift for free it's worth the download.

I saw reviews and it was at the top of my list (RoboRecall), but I guess it was too popular and is now $30!

I have spent way too much time in Boneworks yesterday but pretty much completely got past any weird feeling while running in VR. Only issue is sometimes going in circles and having a cord wrapped around my legs. That, and smacking myself in the face trying to rip a robot spider facehugger off.

Half Life looks really good. Elite Dangerous seems like an amazing game but one that takes a certain level of decimation to master.

Elite dangerous is a good game. Grindy, as mentioned, but lots of different kind of grinds to do. The combat is a good time though. My preference for making money in the game is bounty hunting

I’ve gotten hooked on DCS. They put the P-47 out on early release and I couldn’t say no.

It’s got terrible optimization, but the sim quality is amazing. Switched to the Open Beta version with some improvements. Still, it’s a resource hog. But great if you want to fly military aircraft with more than just “point and click” flight and weapons functionality.

I can rock on some beatsaber. My taste probably sucks. Will have to look into the flight games, I bet that is sweet. Ours has been out of commission for two months - hope you never, ever have to use Oculus for hardware support.

Given that FB is completely taking over Oculus and will require FB account and login by 2023 for current users and immediately for new users, I plan to switch to whatever else is on the market if this one shits the bed.

Possibly the Reverb G2 if it holds up to early reviews. Valve Index is really nice but extremely expensive and requires sensors (actually light emitters) places around the room. I will stick with the inside out tracking for convenience. But not Facebookulus.

The best DCS aircraft models imo are:
    F-86F Sabre
    A-10C Warthog
    L-39 Albatross
    F-5E Tiger II

I’m not so much interested in the modern stuff. Maybe the A-10 but I’ve read it’s one of the most complicated to learn as far as the weapons system goes and being a sim model it’s pretty much useless outside of ground strikes. Modern jets just don’t have the same cool factor for me as WW2 warbirds.

The Mustang model is supposed to be the best WW2 aircraft as far as complete modeling goes, but with most modules being around $50 I will wait for a sale before I try any more.

Would have to have a clickable cockpit too. I don’t have enough buttons for every keybind and couldn’t remember the combinations if I did.

I set up my in flight controls on stick and throttle quad, and all my start procedure and shut down I use in cockpit clicks. Usually MFDs and such get used with in cockpit clicks as well.

Definitely always buy DCS modules when they're on sale.

I only listed the planes that have the best flight models and clickable cockpits. It wasn't really by a selection of my favorite planes so much as just the best simulation experience.

I recommend you check out aerobatics online. Can be a good time flying around and doing the canyon racing and pylon races.
