I am concerned, because DVD/BluRay seems to becoming an endangered species due to streaming.

Not too many BluRay manufacturers left now.

    I have a a bunch of DVD/BluRay discs.

Back in the day I used to repair just about every make of typewriter there was and
also printers , shredders and Panasonic fax machines.
Anyone have a IBM Selectric typewriter that needs repair as I have a ton of parts in my old tool case.LOL
We still use IBM Selectric II's almost daily. And by we, I mean the older folks in the building who can't figure out how to mail merge and print to a laser printer.

Just because people stop using them doesn't mean you discs don't work anymore. I still have about 50 HD-DVD's that we watch often. Same for Blu-Ray and regular DVD. The only drawback is HD-DVD players are hard to find nowadays but I have enough to get by.

How is the resolution on the laserdiscs? I just can't remember.
That's tough to quantify in meaningful ways, not in the least because LDs are analog and the superseding media have been digital.

When LaserDiscs were readily available and DVDs had just come out, we lived in a world of 480-line analog CRT TVs/monitors. In that environment, LDs looked so much better than the early DVDs that it was obvious to even a casual observer. One time I was fortunate enough to spend some time with a good LD player and a 40-inch high-definition CRT. Yes, there was such a thing as "high def" on analog CRTs; the sets were expensive and didn't last that long in the market since flat-screens of various sorts had been introduced by that time. However, I remember that combination as being absolutely incredible. It beat DVD or even BluRay (on SD monitors) all to heck. (At least, that's the way I remember it; I never got to see BluRays side by side with LDs.)

None of that mattered, though. DVDs got better and everybody ditched their analog CRTs for digital flat screens. LD died.

Working from memory, I would say that on a proper monitor most people can't tell, at a glance, which is better - DVD or LD. They might realize that the two pictures are different but actually saying one is better can be tough.

On an average modern monitor, though, LDs lose out pretty badly. They're fine but it's obvious that more modern media are sharper.

That doesn't keep me from feeling nostalgic. Despite their size and 400 pound heft, there are times when I wish I had one of those 40-inch Sony HD CRT beasts. I might dedicate it solely to LDs and old-school games but if I had the space and the money, it sure would be fun.

ETA - TL;DR - Very subjectively speaking, I guess they look like a good 720p source.

    old-school games

Now you've touched a nerve. I miss the old gaming before it got infected by the Twitter Outrage Machine.

For some reason, I spent a half-hour on Polygon yesterday reading an article and the subsequent comments on grey vs black/white morality stories and hated myself afterwards.

Some technology is pretty good. I remember the transition from 8 track to cassettes. from cassettes to CD's. And even now, the transition from CD's to streaming and music apps. I even remember vinyl LP's! (still have quite a few!) I even remember the reel to reel machines. Only reason I remember them is because my Uncle Bill was into high end audio way back long ago. Very few people had reel to reel equipment, so it was kind of rare to see.

About ten or eleven years ago, I started using the Spotify music app on my computers, and even added it to my smart phone earlier this year. It pretty much makes my CD's obsolete! With it on my phone, I have that music source just about anywhere.

I can even remember the satellite radio services. I got XM satellite radio when it was just starting. I liked that I could tune to a station and it didn't matter where I was or how far I went, I always had that channel.

    Well, yeah.

But if people quit using them they won't buy new ones, and then manufacturers quit making them. Then when yours eventually breaks, you are out of luck.

Samsung has already stopped production of bluray players, as have some other manufacturers.

Are we just naming old technology now?

I remember my first computer was a Radio Shack TRS-80. My first computer that could do color cost me $50 from a friend with a drug habit and was a TRS-80+ and used audio cassettes to save data. I still have a few Zip disks floating around here somewhere, and when I moved 2 years ago, I got rid of all my 3-1/2 and 5-1/4" floppy disks.

Just kind of remembering how some of it has transitioned and changed just in my lifetime.

Hang on to them. Vinyl is making a come back.

I remember when those things were king. 100MB on a read/write disk!

I know! The last time at WalMart, they had an entire section of new LP's. So cool.

I still have a record player in my office here at the house. There are sometimes on Friday or Saturday nights, when hanging out here on TGT, I will play some of my old LP's on it.

100MB right up until the click of death. Then 0MB.
I know I got burned. That disk is literally 3 feet from me right now. I keep it around as a reminder to never trust computer tech that much, ever again.

Also the Seagate 1st gen 1TB drive flaw caught me. Theoretically that's fixable but it's been so many years I don't know if I want to go pulling off boards, hacking together wiring, and typing in low-level commands to get back data that's all completely out of date. Even if I were to dd the contents to another drive, I'm not sure I could remember the full-disk password I was using at the time. Perhaps one day nostalgia will compel me to give it a try.

I need a needle for my player. I have a few LPs that were my moms, including three Elvis LPs that are unopened.
