I had one of the Remington 700's (a BDL) that had problems with the safety. What really made the problem bad is that you have to disengage the safety to open the bolt. The rifle would sometimes fire when the safety was clicked off. Surprise!! So I have to say I can't support the 700.

Weatherby probably belongs on the great bolt action list. They make some very fine rifles and the cartridges they developed outperform many commercial cartridges. (For example, check out 300 WBY versus 300 Win)

Having been the owner of probably well over 100 various Model 700's over the years, and I think about nine of them currently, I have never seen one that exhibited that trait with the safety. Odd. Even several times, when that has popped up on various gun forums over the years, it usually gets debunked rather quickly. Hmmm......

The Corps has used Remingtons for years so reliability in the .308 is certainly well proven. My personal experience shooting Mexican Steel matches with hundreds of rounds per weekend are atypical but two failures on the same rifle are two too many

Two failures? How is that possible? Were they on the same rifle?

I'm in camp that the best are non mass production actions although there are a few factory ones that are solid with some tweaks.

I guess that's fine as long as you have deep pockets and a gold card. But most average people don't, so they buy mass produced.

You know that I don't have deep pockets. I just decided long ago to never get married or have kid's,so I can easily save my money for the things that I want.

Yes,I have some nice custom gun's,but I worked hard and saved money to buy or build everyone of them. When you don't stay neck deep in debt, you can have a few nice toy's.

This! When I wanted more & nicer shit I worked a second job. Neither of us wanted to deal with having kids as messed up as we were!

My German K98 is probably my all time favorite bolt action. The 1917 enfield is another great one.

As far as modern goes, Savage, Old Remington and Browning

The most accurate gun I had was a 308 made from an arisaka action. They are good actions. Find one cheap enough just for the action.

When I was a young lad in the late 1960’s, we had family friend that made a yearly hunting trip to Africa. He was a quite a traveler, so he stored his rifles at our house.
None of my friends had ever seen a .375 or .458 H&H Magnum rifle. His rifle of choice the Finnish Sako brand. I remember fondling them and imagining hunting in the wilds of Africa, so far from Texas. The rifle actions were as smooth as butter. I was too small to fire either one, but if they could talk, the stories they would tell...

I like the older 700 Remingtons. This one, in 7mm Magnum, has been tuned and rebedded. A Williams steel triggerguard and floorplate has been fitted. Great rifle.

I had one that I put in a H&S Prescision stock with an upgraded Timney trigger that was great too. When I need a bigger gun for Africa I had a .416 Rem Mag barrel installed.

Oh boy... lemme preface this - I typically go for modern semiautomatic rifles and pistols for most shooting, its just what I prefer in general BUT I have a soft spot for old school bolt actions, mostly WW1-2 era bolt action battle rifles.

    In no particular order (sorta)

K-31 for its straight pull weirdness
Winchester Model 70 /Mid 2000's and older Remington Model 700s (tie)
    Springfield 1903 / Remington & Smith-Corona 03-A3 variants
    K-98
    Mosin

And for honorable mention - the Ruger American Rimfire
