70% isopropol alcohol is a better disinfectant. The presence of water is a crucial factor in destroying or inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms with isopropyl alcohol. Water acts as a catalyst and plays a key role in denaturing the proteins of cell membranes.

    70% solutions penetrate
the cell wall more completely, coagulate all proteins, and the microorganism dies. Extra water content slows evaporation, increasing surface contact time and enhancing effectiveness. Isopropyl alcohol over 91% coagulates proteins instantly, and causes a protective layer to be created which protects other proteins from further coagulation

Head over to the paint section and grab a quart of denatured alcohol...

It will work but that stuff is harsh on the skin.......

It breaks through the cell wall and takes out all the oils and moisture. your hands will end up looking like chalk without replacing some water/moisture.

That’s why you mix it with aloe. About 3/1 aughta do it.

Not all aloe is equal. Some are more watered down than others. You’ll know when you mix it. Worst part is denatured has a stronger smell.

I'm glad it was one of the things I stashed away years ago. 91% and 70% alcohol. I had a 2 liter bottle of sanitizer that was expired in 2015, I replenished it with one of 20 bottles I had. That, peroxide, and bleach are plentiful here at the compound.

The wife thought we didn't have any either until I broke out the supply. She was rather pleased with my supplies these past weeks.

Hydrogen peroxide doesn't keep forever, loses by some estimates 0.5% concentration per year at the 3% concentrations commonly bought at the grocery store. Opening the bottle speeds that up.

You cant store peroxide for very long at all......It breaks down into water and oxygen rather quickly.

Kroger had several bottles of the 51 and 71 % stuff. Going for old people hours this morning and hope they have the 91% stuff.

That's good to know, it's probably all trash then unless it can be restored.

Edit: maybe I'll hold on to it. Open bottles appear to break down rather quickly.

That is why they put it in brown plastic bottles......impervious to light. So you have 6 years to use it but it decays .5% per year

From my reading the recipe I saw called for very little Hydrogen Peroxide. The stated purpose was to kill anything initially in there when made. Not for any long term effects.

So I’ve finally pulled the trigger on an order for 3 x 32 OZ of 99% isopropyl alcohol. We’ve hit multiple outlets over the last several weeks and I just decided **** it. We need some and so it’s in route. Guess we’re gonna make our own hand sanitizer so I got Aloe Vera gel coming as well. The aloe wasn’t a bad price but the damn alcohol delivered is about $20 per 32oz bottle. That’s a little much IMO.

For the last couple weeks our HEB has been selling off brand "hand sanitizer" that is according to the label just 80% IA minus any type of gel for around $6 in the standard clear liquor bottle size.

    To All,

IF you have a DOLLAR GENERAL near you, the stores (at least in San Antonio), have a LOT of 91% rubbing alcohol at 2.99 per quart.
(I bought 2 quarts last Friday.)

    yours, satx

Once again.....check your local liquor stores.......many distilleries are producing hand sanitizing alcohol now and selling it through outlets (Spec's) at reasonable prices.
