Looking for opinions on a cheap but reliable HD pump shotgun. I'm considering these 3 although I do appreciate Remington 870s as well. Afaik the Maverick is the made in Mexico offering by Mossberg that is essentially a 500 series.
Although I already have an sx2 tactical I like the thought of a truck, ranch or lend to your brother HD gun. I'll probably buy 2 or 3 at once if the price is right. At the Maverick's price point, 3 is no problem. If I get into 870s or 590s I'm looking at 2 tops.
My main requirement is minimum 5 shot capacity but I'd prefer more. Also a 18 to 22" smooth bore is in order. I have no interest in 3" rounds so that's a non factor. I've never handled an sxp or Maverick so I'm in need of some input.

I have an SXP, I don't have that many rounds through it though. I can tell you this: fast cycling, lightweight, and nice to look at. I have the FDE model and for the price, it's a good option.

I probably only have 50 rounds through it, so long term reliability hasn't been measured. I did put different bird and buck shot through it with no problems. I slipped an accidental magnum round in that woke me up :D.

Oh, paid 160.00 new for it.

I can't speak to the Winchester.
My last Remington? I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.
    I've got several mossbergs.
My 500 is factory. 18.25" open cylinder barrel.
Magazine runs the full length of the barrel, capacity is 7 rounds of 2.75" shells. It's been rock solid from day one.

I prefer my older Mossberg 500. It's action is smooth as butter.

As are mine, and the 500 is probably the most prolific of them all having been around going on 60 years now!

The 500 was designed to be simple to clean and maintain with the added feature of interchangeable barrels possible without the use of any tools. It also has generous clearances to clear dirt and debris to ensure reliability.

It is essentially the Kalashnikov of shotguns...simple, cheap, reliable and effective!

My only complaint about the 500 is that I have to buy a new barrel to increase the magazine tube capacity but I can live with that.

I have all three, plus an older Remington 870. Personally, I would trust a new 870 with the way things are going at Remington. QC seems to have taken a nose-dive, bit time in the last several years.

The Maverick is essentially an economy version of the Mossberg 500, with an 870 style safety. I have owned three over the years. Very solid performers, at very attractive price. Still own one currently. Only think I'm not crazy about, is that they only come with synthetic stocks. Not a really big deal, except for making them look cheap. The current one, has had quite a few rounds through it over the years. The wife does call it her shotgun BTW!

Hard to go wrong with a Mossberg 500! Simple, rugged amd reliable. Lot's of options for them, and lots of various versions to choose from new. Excellent shotguns. Nuf said!

I did buy the Winchester SXP Defender some years ago, wanting a shorter barreled shotgun for home defense without spending a fortune. Great shotgun. Snooth, reliable and does just what I want from it. Mine has had quite a few rounds through it, and is kind of my go to shotgun for riding fence lines on the golf cart. IIRC, I paid about $270 for mine brand new some years ago. Definitely would buy another, and highly recommend them.

I’ve shot a Mossberg 500 on and off for 40 years. Rugged and reliable. I also have a Maverick but have not shot it yet. They seem much alike.

I use a Mossberg 500 also as a home defense shotgun. Mine has a 20” barrel. I’m left handed and the tang mounted safety is a big plus for me.

Mine is well used and the action is as slick as greased owl boogers.

I have the maverick 88 security 7+1 model.

it works, super light, kicks like a mule.
I killed a quail with it, just for shits and grins.

I haven’t tactifucked it up at all, it’s bare bones, impossible to screw up. I like the safety, it’s in a position I trust. It’s cheap as well, I paid 180$ at a gun show.

It’s not super smooth, but I use Remington oil on it and it’s smooth enough.

I wanted a small maneuverable pump for home defense, 18". You can't beat the Maverick for that. They sell a Maverick combo also with a full size barrel and chokes so if you want you can have a sporting clays and home defense just by changing the barrels. I have 5 other expensive shotguns too but only one pump and I have to admit, I really like the Maverick.

I already own an FN SLP and it is a thing of beauty. In this case I'm looking specifically for a truck or ranch gun that won't break my heart if it gets scratched up or stolen.
The Maverick's price really can't be beat. The defender model has perked my interest the most although I really like the 590 retro by Mossberg too. I also looked into Stevens pump guns from academy but they had a lot of feeding issues. Definitely not something I want to bet my life on.

No reason not to go maverick for your purpose or mossberg 500 for a few less plastic parts.

Unless you want to throw away money.

My 590a1 is my one primary pump gun so that's why I didnt go maverick or mossberg 500. I've had both and never even heard of a failure much less seen one.

The Steven's is trash. Action Bar always breaks loos from the pump grip rendering it a club.

I have read about several issues with the Stevens pump shotguns as well. Some years ago I would have suggested the Remington 870, but not the current ones. If you could find an older one used, that also might be an option to consider.

I did have the Maverick Defender some years ago. 20" barrel and an 8 round tube. Not the smoothest new, but after some use, and quite a few shells through it, it smoothed up pretty good. Hard to beat the Maverick at it's price point. Sometimes you can get lucky, and find some decent prices on Mossber 500's.

I have a mossberg 500, i like it alot for having interchangeable barrels. Whatever you get, you should have the ability to mount a light on it - cant shoot what you do not see.
