Finally out of the gulag (work). Been wanting to reply.

I recommend op check out a Yugo m24/47 if he can find one in good condition. I regret trading mine. Was accurate and 8mm Mauser ain’t no slouch. With the prices of nuggets (mosin nagant) going up, why not just find a Mauser of some sort?

Fir (not fixing that typo. Redneck talk for the win) modern rifles savage is nice for the money.

nothing wrong with a persons first rifle being made from communist magic elves. I just don’t like nuggets. Hate em really. What piles...on the other hand a nugget could be a good option as a first rifle if you want something you can unload and just toss in your truck bed because that’s what it deserves.

22lr's are great but (for a new guy) after a range trip or two you are going to feel the need for more power pretty quickly. I'd suggest a bolt fed 223/5.56 with a detachable magazine. Extremely versatile and won't kill your wallet/shoulder when you want to shoot it. New factory rifles with wood stocks (in the budget segment) are getting scarce but they are out there. Laminate is pretty good but usually heavy. Make the 22lr your 2nd rifle. Welcome to the hobby/lifestyle/addiction.

For a good traditional wood and blue rifle it doesn’t get any more classic than a Remington 700 BDL in 30-06

Or a Winchester model 70 in the same.

    Helotes!
I'll grant you that they are not the prettiest rifle...

Bite your tongue, young man. The may not have the aesthetically-pleasing looks of a super model, but even they look like plain little girls when you remove all the makeup! The true beauty of the Mosin is its history, some of which can be ascertained though the myriad of different stamps and markings on the rifle...

And to be fair, an AR isn't a pretty rifle either.

No argument on this from me!

If you are lucky. The vast majority spent their time boxed up in a crate.

Part of the fun was digging through a box and finding that one gem.

Ive owned a Glock 19 for about a month. It rules.

Next, I want a rifle. Specifically I want a wooden looking, bolt action one-at-a-time style shooter. That old WW2 look. Quick google search, the Mauser, or Carcano (dont want a carcano because of the whole Oswald connotation.)

I don't know a ton about guns, but Im slowly learning. What do you guys suggest in terms of the style, price, caliber etc?

    THANKS!

If you are truly new to firearms, I have advice: Get to know your local Gun Shop, a real gun shop, not a department in a sports store. The extra costs are tiny in view of the real advice given.

Begin with a .22LR CARBINE. There are many reasons to start with a .22.

If you insist on a centerfire, check out the Ruger pistol caliber carbine which uses your G19’s ammo & magazines.

Any further choice requires knowledge of your family, activities, home area, etc.

As Alan Ladd told us in the epic movie “Shane”: “A gun is a TOOL!” Tools are built for specific purposes & uses.

I shot in military matches for four years with a Swedish mauser in 6.5x55. However , your choice should depend on !) what performance you need and 2) what looks and feels good to you. SO MANY WONDERFUL choices!

If you are riding a motorcycle, I know it’s not a bolt gun, but the 10/22 takedown would be a practical and logical choice. I carry one with me most places.

    jimijames,

IMVHO, it is HARD to beat a Remington Model 760 pump rifle for ALL-AROUND Texas hunting/home/farm defense.

As a FIRST rifle, pick a GOOD/USED .30-06, .308 or .270 as they are INEXPENSIVE (Many perfectly serviceable examples are 250.oo or less in the "common" calibers. - I recently bought a "spare" .30-06 in good condition for 150.oo cash from a garage sale.) , factory ammo is commonly available even in the small country stores, easy to maintain/clean, seldom break, easy to repair IF they do have a broken/worn part & are ACCURATE as H, too. = ALL of my pump rifles will put all their rounds into a playing card at 200M, IF I do my part.
(I own at least one Model 760 in every caliber that was made, with the exception of 2 chamberings that are so rare that I cannot find/afford one.)

IMO, a Model 760 in .30-06 is PERFECTLY SUITABLE for any medium/large game animal to 400-500#.

BTW, with my 73YO eyes that don't see open sights well anymore, ALL of my pump rifles have 2X-4X, fixed power, REDFIELD or LEOPOLD scopes that I pick up CHEAP at gunshows.

    just my OPINIONS, satx
