I have a cousin who's been finishing the genealogy of my fathers side of the family. He sent out a letter letting us know it's finished.

I decided to check it out tonight. As it turns out we have traced ancestors back to 160, Finnish royalty and part of Finnish mythology.

One branch of the family was Scottish nobility as far back as we can trace, around 1060, that branch was shipped to the US as prisoners of war by Oliver Cromwell.

On both my mother's side and my father's side we have deep roots in the US. Back to 1609. Except for my mother's father's side of the family we've all been here no later than 1723. My grandfather's grandfathers and grandmothers were from Norway.

We are from Scotland, England, Finland, France and Norway. There are some great stories linked to many of my ancestors.

To Fornjotur King In Kvenland, I salute you.

I've been checking out mine as well. Able to go back to 1070 on my fathers side. Oldest one I could find is Sir Baldwin de Carleton. Knight, from England. Lots of history on my fathers side and most of them all from SW Missouri, though I have many relatives here in Texas and some n the Ardmore area. I always knew I didn't belong in CA!

How is it, no one does the genealogy thing, to find back in 607, their Grandmother at the time was a dish washer, then in 1006, their Grandfather worked in quarry as a laborer, then in 1750 that Grandmother was a prostitute with 20 kids, by 20 different fathers and died of syphilis and in 1910 that Grandfather was caught stealing chickens and went to prison for the rest of his life and now you find your prison stretch has been increased another 5 years for shanking your cellie?

Why does no one have this kind of genealogy history?

Well, I come from a long line of losers and you won't see me posting my ancestry. Maybe that will explain it.
My dad told me my great uncle would have a glass of whisky before supper, another with supper, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a shot of whiskey on top for dessert.
You don't go round bragging about that.
My great-grandfather married his first wife , put her in a mental institution, married her sister, and then married a native American when his second wife died.
We know not from which womb we sprung!

I suppose it depends on the brand of whiskey.

No one kept track of the kitchen drudges. Unless you have peerage in your genealogy you chances of tracing it back further than around 1600 gets real dicey. There's a lot of branches in my family that end before or around that time.

Also genealogy is different than family history. Some of the people in my family tree, while in the nobility, were absolute scum.
