Only in america could you face this type of penalty for shooting a deer yet break into the country and be allowed to walk around free.

Not that i think he should not suffer for poaching. Many species are wiped out because of poachers.

Name one species that was wiped out by "illegal" (ie poaching) hunting???

He was illegal in shooting the deer but how was one to know the difference in the antler size to distinguish between a felony and a misdemeanor? One of the reasons I never went duck hunting, they all look the same to me.
It's all intimidating enough to me, I bought 2016 combo license, and never went in the woods. Didn't put a line in the water either. Who wants to go out and get tangled up with tyranny?

Plenty of gorillas. And habitat destruction has played a much more significant role in the decline of wild populations than poaching.
Habitat destruction has played a significant role, yet it's debatable if it has been more damaging than poaching; they work in conjunction. All sub-species are on the endangered list and some listed as critically endangered. You're not getting a permit to hunt any of them.

As well you shouldn’t get a permit to hunt them. All evidence does point to habitat destruction being the major cause. Sport hunting in the 19th and early 20th century certainly sped the process up, but that is not poaching.

Africans were killing and eating all manner of primates ( including each other) for millennia without adversely affecting the overall population.

No man; I'm talking latter 20th century (1980ish-2000) proper poaching. After all the sport hunting damage and folks figured out that the slips had to set on all that, it was a huge problem all over the continent for every animal. It still is to a point. Asides from ivory, most of the black market sales are about dead. Bushmeat is the current issue.
