Lol, it’s got a rack but I’d have to put a battery in it to raise the gear and I’m lazy.

Hopefully next weekend both will be out at the field. Last attempt with the Phantom a lost a wheel when taking off and skidded to a stop. Little E-clip popped off due to a somewhat poor landing on the maiden and I didn’t notice.

Please tell me that’s a gas burner.

Nope, it’s electric. Despite the $100 cost of the battery, it’s far more affordable for me than a gasser version. And the convenience of plugging in a battery over tuning an engine exaggerated when it keeps me from tuning and synchronizing 2 engines.

The landing gear is awe inspiring though. It’s probably the nicest thing on any plane I own.

Sweet. I love what electric and foam has done for the hobby, I just miss sound and smell of nitro. I know what glow radials go for and you’re right, the cost savings aren’t trivial.

I love the smell of nitro too but safety matters more. Unless I'm flying gliders hundreds of feet above other planes, I will land and head to the hanger. Motor noise limits communication with gasser pilots on the line.

Nitro does smell great. I couldn’t figure out why I liked it so much until I opened an 8lb jug of Reloder 50 the other day and it clicked.

I enjoy actually flying my IC planes more than the electrics, but the electrics are so much more convenient that they get the vast majority of flying time. And with the cost of glow fuel it’s much cheaper to fly electric over the long run.

True gassers are cheapest as long as you don’t crash them before making up the initial cost in fuel savings.

YG, would you buy the Timber X again knowing what you know?
Any idea if original Timber flaps can do double duty with the ailerons?

The real question is, is it as expensive as BRD?
If you're willing to be patient while accumulating used gear, you could have a programmable transmitter, dual or quad port charger, and 1-3 decent planes for $500ish. Remember, I only know electrics.

If you'd like to buddy box (zero chance of YOU crashing) to see if it even interests you, drop me a PM and we'll meet somewhere.

The original Timber can’t do full span ailerons because it has slotted(?) flaps. They can only go down. Really nice the way they are built but would bind up if they went up.

The X is ok, but it doesn’t really do short landings. I tried everything I can think of but it just won’t float down like the OG Timber. Stalls and falls on its face. Aerobatics are ok I guess. Not like the Visionaire. I have fun with it, but if I had it to do all over again I’d get the Turbo Timber instead of the Timber X since I like STOL.

The X does pop tops ok and has plenty of power for vertical. Knife edges if you counter the rudder coupling. Doesn’t do flat spins very easily, hovers ok. I think there are better aerobatic planes for the price and all 3ad planes will jump off the ground just as good, but may not handle rough ground as well.

Guess I coulda figured that out, if only I had a brain :(

Of course for a wee bit less than $250, I could mod the flaps and change servos if existing only throw down. Not sure it has enough (or any) vert power though, probably not.

Thanks, the X hasn't really been on my radar until a couple buddies recently got them. I hesitantly renewed my AMA @3hrs before midnight deadline but let the club membership lapse so rogue fields only right now.

And on your club friend who said 150' ceiling, no idea where he got that number.

On orig Timber power I remembered this vid from 3yrs ago. No idea if he modded power but seems flaps are OEM. Of course he's clearly very good, which I am not :(

Did a little flying yesterday. Couldn’t find my DC battery clips for my charger so it was limited, but did maiden my F7 Tigercat.

I’ve seen that vid. IIRC it’s been modified and runs on 4S and a power 10 motor. Basically a Turbo Timber in the old body style.

If I had it to do again I’d have gotten a Turbo Timber instead of the X. Timber lives on floats now and I miss flying it when the tank gets low.

I’ll try to get some picture of the flap linkage later. I don’t think it would be a straight forward mod, but hadn’t really looked at it with that in mind either.

My club doesn’t push any extra rules. If they required any more than an AMA number I’d probably do the same. They are so laid back they though it would be a good idea to make ME the safety officer...

And on your club friend who said 150' ceiling, no idea where he got that number.

He didn’t think that was the ceiling, he knows it’s recommended not to fly over 400’. He just can’t tell how high he is. He thinks he is at 150’ when he is really at 400’.

No need for pics, I have the original and the UMX.

My club didn't have extraneous rules either, I just wasn't going, didn't even go to the big electric meet in October. In fact one guy flew two Apprentice simultaneously by disconnecting rudder on one of them. Even managed 1 or 2 loops before spending +10 minutes with the helpful eyes of several to get them both down in tact. And don't go getting the big head, after 5yrs of membership my club alternated between 2 guys being Safety pretty much begging them back each time.

Heh, safety is pretty much a do nothing position for our club. I don’t even know who the last guy was. They nominated me because I “actually show up at the field regularly”.
