edit - called around to a few places, and they told me battery powered optics are not allowed, and that's a rule from the state of Texas...

    Hey there,

I saw a few places online that mentioned you can't use red dots/optics of any kind on your pistol while doing the shooting portion of the LTC test.

Anybody know if this is true? What about raised suppressor night sights?

Not a big deal, just wondering if I should remove my Trijicon SRO red dot ahead of time.

    Thanks,

    Instructor since 2003

It used to be a rule under the Texas Administrative Code that optical enhancing devices were not permitted for quals

TITLE 37 PUBLIC SAFETY AND CORRECTIONS
PART 1 TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY
CHAPTER 6 LICENSE TO CARRY HANDGUNS
    SUBCHAPTER G CERTIFIED HANDGUN INSTRUCTORS
RULE §6.73 Firearm Proficiency Training Equipment

But I don't find that section anymore. Any other instructors know if the restriction was moved, because I find no such restriction now?

ok TXInv. (if you rely on battery powered optics to hit a target as a novice (most TLC people are exactly that) THEN you have a serious problem if your "sight" goes dark because of battery failure. Learn proper use of iron sights. Then once you KNOW how to sight a pistol lern how to use the electronic sight.

IF you have to rely on an electronic sight to hit your target, your will find in the real world that you are in trouble.

Objection your honor, asserting facts not in evidence. Good grief.

THEN you have a serious problem if your "sight" goes dark because of battery failure.

That's why his pistol also has suppressor height sights. It allows for co-witnessing the iron sights with the RDS. In the very unlikely event that the Trijicon optic goes down, you still have your iron sights as a backup.

My vision isn't the best but the distances ain't all that bad on qualification. I used a pistol with a 5"barrel with the neon inserts in the front and rear sights lined up the dots and scored a 249 out of 250 on qualification.

Thanks for the tip, my decades of firearms and instructor experience would never have prepared me to know that.

The OP isn't asking your opinion, he is asking if he is permitted to use optics when he quals. When you have educated input on that come back and see me

Correct... The less I have to take off my SRO & re-zero it, the better.

don't see the rule in effect now. I imagine most instructors are not aware of this change. I called two last night and neither knew and both were surprised that it wasn't there. One instructor (my father) actually checked the Administrative Code too last night.

If any other instructors here can check and see if perhaps they moved the rule to a different section please let us know.

One would think this would have been included in the updates that instructors received.......I will call DPS next week to verify........
Call three times and get three different answers. Lol.

Have you had a chance to look in the Admin code yet? The entire section where it used to is missing, but it could be elsewhere now. I am interested in your research

I read the Admin code and re-read every darn rule, but didn't find it either..........
