Seriously. I took it to the range yesterday and shot it for the first time with my younger son. Damn thing is almost pellet gun quiet - I even pulled my ear pro off to listen, and it didn't get any louder. I checked my ammo to make sure it wasn't some odd specialty stuff, but it's standard velocity CCI .22LR. Instead of the "k-Pow!" I was expecting, it was just a dull "pop" on every shot, but the steel was ringing and the bowling pins were rocking when the rounds hit.

Anyone else notice this with theirs? I've never fired a .22 that was this quiet - it's weird. Not unwelcome, but definitely unexpected.

If you compare it to an AR 15, yeah, it is pretty damn quiet. I've shot thousands of rounds through my 10/22 without ear pro. Never used ear pro for a .22 rifle until I took it to a public range where it's required.

Did you go around saying "huh?" the rest of the day?

No. I used ear pro, and we were at an outdoor range anyway. The only time I took the plugs out was when I listened to one shot to see if it was really as quiet as it seemed. My ears did not ring afterward, and my hearing is fine.

I'm familiar with what. 22LR sounds like from a rifle (from various rifles over my entire life), which is why this caught my attention. If I hadn't observed the impact on the target, I'd have worried that the first shot was a squib because it was so quiet. Even so, I still checked the ammo to be sure it wasn't something unusual.

Obviously none of you have noticed the same with your 10/22s. I guess I'll chalk it up to "well, that's odd" and move along.

Feel free to go back to making fun of me for asking a simple question about something unusual I observed now.

My 10/22 Takedown is pellet gun quiet. Probably has something to do with that Mist-22 and polyurethane bolt buffer, but whatever.

Keep telling yourself that, but get your ears checked out.

If the idea of low sound per this rifle were so, wouldn't it be marketed?

My Savage bolt action is insanely quiet. Just a hammer click and a pfft. Might be the SilencerCo Sparrow suppressor though! I use the CCI standard velocity. My take down 10/22 sounds just like any other rifle though unless I switch the suppressor over to it.

Standard velocity is also much quiter than high velocity. I noticed that when shooting my little Marlin 39a Mountie last week. I actually checked to make sure the bullet had cleared the barrel. Blowing into the open breech made smoke come out of the muzzle so all was good.
