    Unaddressed sub-category.....

    German food.
In San Antonio I have no idea.

Quite authentic is Friesenhaus right off I35 on Seguin in New Braunfels. Ten miles from San Antonio on your way to tube the Comal this weekend!!!

Sadly, the hard working German immigrant owners lost their green card and had to leave the US.

It's been bought by some locals who want to keep it authentic.

Best is the 20 taps of very authentic German brews. No IPAs or foo-foo fruity beers. Generally serve in correct brand specific glassware with correct coasters....very European correctness. Go there. Nick and Brian will treat you right!!!

The Rubin with a side of bacon-fried German potatoes or red cabbage or spaetzle is to die for!!!!

I'll drive down there any time!!!!!
There used to be a little place in Comfort with good German food.

As for Mi Tierra, it is open 24 hours, but I haven’t ever tried their breakfast. I can never finish my plate either.

Don't make it down to SA that much anymore, so these may be a little dated.

El Chaparral (Helotes) has the best fajitas and refried beans anywhere. Next best stop for TexMex is La Fonda.

    Tip Top Cafe.

    Formosa Garden.

Viet-Nam Cafe had incredible spring rolls.

Not sure where the best bbq would be these days. I wouldn't serve Bill Miller's to my worst enemy's dog.

Fudd's always had a good burger.

I would name the best place to get tamales, but then I would have to kill everyone reading the thread. Some secrets simply cannot be revealed.

    How about craft brews?
I'm in SA once or twice a month at least.
Half work, half pleasure. Microbrews are a simple pleasure.
    ......................
    Just beer:
    Big Hops Growler Station.

    Beer and very decent food.
    Freetail.
Noisy inside.Sit outside at sunset. Nice.

    ......................
Have not been way down to Blue Star in maybe a decade.
    Headed there Friday.
    Any experiences?

El Chapparal is still very good. Have never had a bad meal there...they have an extensive menu...the staff is polite and efficient. We like it a lot.

Now. Cough up the tamale source. We'll take our chances.
BTW, I have been away for 33 years. Is Goa's Tamales still a thing?

    San Antonio!
Ate at Two Step Restaurant and Cantina at Loop 1604 and Braun Road last night to celebrate my oldest son's 22nd birthday. The place always had a soft spot in my heart as it was constructed from a homestead originally built in the 1850’s by early American pioneers and German immigrants, Philipp and Carolina (Braun) Ruempel, among the earliest settlers of Helotes, Texas. After marrying in 1869 they raised ten children in the Ruempel homestead and remained there for the rest of their lives. The restaurant is constructed from what originally functioned as a house and barn. In fact, both are buried in the Zion cemetery located on Leslie Road within spitting distance of the restaurant. The builders kept as much of the original homestead as possible and its construction was in accordance with the guidelines of the San Antonio Conservation Society and has been completed with the utmost respect for the original structure. Exterior walls have been preserved as well as original roofing where possible. All materials required to be taken down were repurposed in other areas of the restaurant...

Now, as for the menu it has a decent selection of items that are well prepared. My son and I both got the New York Strip with Loaded Mashed Potatoes and Chipotle Butter, and I added a side of Sauteed Brussel Sprouts. While not quite gourmet, it was a lot better than what you'd get at chain steak places. My wife got the Smoked Brisket Burrito and was pleased with it. While it is a tad pricey, given the quality of the food it wasn't unreasonable. Service was good but we eat early. They have live music on occasion, and a nice bar.

I try to avoid franchise restaurant chains and Two Step is the kind of restaurant I will seek out. We don't eat here often but that's more due to the fact that we like to check out a variety of places when we go out to eat. Two Step and El Chaparral in Helotes are the two places closest to us where we take visitors when they come to town, given the decent menus and ambiance.

Forgot Clear Springs, on 46 southwest of New Braunfels.

    Onion rings...

When I first started going to El Chaparral, it was in a little house converted to a restaurant. Don't think it had more than about 15 tables. Weekend nights you had to be prepared for a long wait.

Then it added on and almost doubled its size. Later yet, the new fancy, huge restaurant was built.

I was worried that the quality would slip, as it so often does when a major expansion/new build occurs. But glad that it held up well.

    Any Southtown aficionados ???

A blast from my past tonight.
Wife just conked out after a couple sangria wines. (Thank you Jerry Jeff W.)

Ate and drank at Blue Star down in Southtown for hours.
This place and area is really developing and revitalized.

    I'm here for a lifetime-friend's 35th wedding anniversary.
I thought I was going to have to drive 65 miles back home.
Instead we got invited to an unused bedroom in a 12 person AirBNB with this balcony I'm sitting on overlooking King William street in a 19th century mansion.

Freaking gorgeous warm south TX night.

Later, to the Pearl Farmer's Market in the AM.

    Life "IS" good.

Best Thai -- Bangkok Cuisine in Universal City. Beats any I have had in San Antonio.

Best Indian -- India Oven on Patricia (off West Ave.) They have been great for decades.

Best slightly upscale Mexican food: El Jarro del Arturo (Blanco and Bitters). Great freshmade tortillas and sn excellent menu. Their chicken mole is top notch.

Best taco shop: Tacos 'n Salsa on Jones Maltsberger. Great quick food. Excellent breakfast tacos.

Thanks for that one. Wife and I have been missing good Indian food and that is close enough to go to. We met my daughter at another spot years ago in the same general area. I hit her up for the name and will add it here when I hear back (if it's still open). It was pretty good also.
