I’ve only recently purchased a handgun, so I want to get more proficient shooting before I take the class and apply for the license. But I may go ahead and just take the class now and get my fingerprints and application filed because I got delayed (again) purchasing an AR lower today. I know it won’t do nothing for me now, but I’m hoping it will make it a lot less complicated in the future. The last time I got delayed, they called me the next morning and it was already approved. It’s not a huge thing, but as soon as they say you’re delayed, my mind starts running away with thoughts of someone with my name being wanted and ATF showing up at my door!

Texas does not have a CCL permit.

It was called a CHL since 1997 until the OC option , then it became simply a LTC

It is nice to bypass NICs checks

I’ve had mine since the year the law came into effect.. I think 1996 or 1997

The law was passed in 1995 and went into effect in 1996. In 93 our then Governor Ann Richard's vetoed the bill. George Bush was elected and the bli was presented to him in 95. He signed it right away.

    ^^^This.

I was regularly delayed on almost every transfer for a year or two a few years back. SSN didn't stop it from happening. For some reason the delays just seem to stop after a while. No visits from da man. :)

I remember I had my class and everything done and I got my permit mailed to me and it had a big orange sticker on it that you had to peel off and it said something to the effect that you cant carry until a certain date.
Not sure if that was Sept 1st but I think it was Sept or Jan

Did they give any explanation as to why you had to wait? Seems unusual that they sent you a permit and then said wait. What for? You either passed of you didn't!

Maybe I misunderstood, isn't the concealed carry law "in effect"? I hope so since I've been carrying since 1996. Once a person has received their license they should not have to wait (unless the license was dated to take effect at a certain date).

This was after the law was signed and the DPS was processing applications but the law didn’t take effect until a certain date.

This happens all the time, a bill is signed by the Gov but doesn’t take effect t until later, sometimes months.

I took the class the first week it was offered in Sept 1995, sent in all the paperwork, the law went into effect Jan.01,1996. Got my license in the mail in Feb, ready to use. Have a low license number.

Do it now. No reason to wait. You will pass.

Wow, this went off-track in a hurry.

Back to the OP, taking the LTC class is a very good choice on your part. It's not about shooting the pistol. (The shooting test is so damned easy that you'd have to try to fail in order to do so.) The class has a lot of good information about the realities of using the pistol for your protection. Once you cover the legal aspects of a shooting, I think your perspective will be changed and that will - hopefully - prevent you from having a severe problem in the future. Choosing to carry a firearm means that you are adopting a responsibility to use it correctly and to remain within the law. You won't learn any of that from watching movies from Hollywood or from internet "experts".

Now, with respect to actually becoming adept with your pistol, nothing can replace regular practice. If you can, find someone who has good experience and let them work with you to polish up your technique. Pistol shooting takes time to perfect.
