I appreciate everyone’s help. I’m gonna pick up some snap caps today. And I’ll be back at the range Sunday (and hopefully Monday if I can get my day off work!) I was about 80% sure my problems were just because I’m brand new to guns. But there was a good 20% in the back of my mind telling me that I was just a terrible shot and maybe I should get rid of the gun and get a bat or something!!!!

No need to get a bat. Come to the family reunion on 12th. There will be those there that you might learn a lot from.

And just think about it like this as well. If you can make it out to the Reunion, you will have more than a couple hundred years combined experience at your disposal.

I'm in Spring, west of 45. If you'd like, we could get together to do a little shooting. I'm not a great shot; I've never shot Distinguished and now that I'm old I accept that I never will. (Kudos to t-astragal!) However, I know some basics I'd be happy to pass along.
The best I can offer is I agree with others, get a .22 (love my Browning Buck Mark) and take Ben up on his offer.

Bonus points, ask him a really odd question and he's likely to have a rather entertaining, yet real life reply. :)

Sounds like you are squeezing your whole hand instead of just the trigger finger. That will make the shot low and left. Concentrate of a good, solid grip and then just squeeze the trigger finger.

DO you know an experienced shooter that can help you? Also you could ask one of the guys at the range to take a look. Another thing is the sights could be slighly off. It is more likely its the grip you take or way you squeeze the trigger.

I was lucky enough to get several offers of help, and have plans to meet up with someone next weekend. I have gotten a whole lot better since I first made the post. One of the things I was doing was shooting one time, then wanting to look at the target to see where I hit and completely re-doing my grip and stance every shot. That was pretty stupid. I’ve learned to shoot, release trigger just until it resets while getting back on target, then shooting again.

    1. You are standing wrong

    2. You are holding the gun wrong

    3. You are flinching like crazy

    4. You probably dont really understand how the sights work.

If I were you, I would watch jerry mickulek videos on how to shoot a pistol. He is the best in the biz and does a great job of explaining how to properly support a pistol.

Another issue I’m having is my vision! I don’t wear glasses, although I do have some cheap readers that I use occasionally. When I am looking through the sights with my left eye closed, it is extremely blurry. Not sure if I should just go get my vision checked, I’m 47 so I’m guessing it’s starting to go south. Or maybe try to use the readers when I am shooting.
