You could do an ar15 but in BO, 40wt or 30-223. Light weight but decent performance. X39 or 30/30. Ar10 carbines aren't that heavy, rifles are.

    Middle of no where
Or less...I got a PSA AR10 complete lower, and PSA 6.5 CM complete upper, for $450

PSA is going crazy with the deals these days.

Hello everyone.... I am looking to build my first 308. That being said, is there like a "check list" of parts that I will need to buy? I want to make sure I buy everything correctly the first time. Any kind of info will help.

    Thank you
    Eddie

If your starting a new build and want to take a more hands on approach, I recommend starting with an 80% lower. Its been a fun learning experience, building from the ground up and alot easier than you would expect. I bought an AR-308 80% lower jig from 5D tactical at https://www.5dtactical.com/ar-308-lower-jigs-s/107.htm and picked up their 80% lower to get started. It was super easy to use, inexpensive and didn't require any special equipment. I just used a makita hand router and was able to start my build. Its been alot of fun so far and since its gen 1 dpms pattern, it is highly compatible and there have been alot of easy to find parts available as ive progressed with the build. If your interested in going that route, I highly recommend 5D Tactical for the cost effectiveness and how easy it makes the build.

Well, 6.5CM is a high-pressure round after all...

In the interests of recoil management and proactively avoiding/minimizing carpal tunnel, one does occasionally need to make sacrifices ;)

So would it be best to build and AR15 first, just to get my feet wet? Building an AR15 is also on my to do list.
i just built my 1st, which is a 308/ar10 platform.

i got the 80% lower from noreen and a discontinued noreen 308 jig from brownells. bought a HF router and finished the lower. got a lower parts kit LPK, stock/buffer/spring.. basically the entire lower half. bought a 2nd hand complete upper that was basically brand new. went & put some rounds through it & got my 1st taste of all the tuning that is required to make the weapon reliable.

with that being said, any $500 .308 pattern rifle is going to require another $100-200 in upgrades and several hours time to slow the gas & recoil down. adjustable gas block, heavy buffer & spring, etc.

i’m still reading, researching & tinkering to get it dialed in. btw i’m on a dpms 1st gen pattern which is the most common... these are known as LR308 or DPMS gen1 when shopping for compatible parts & mags. can’t use anything (2) small frame dpms gen2 or (3) SR25 the ‘knights armament’ line aka KAC, Armalite, Bushmaster. those round out the 3 different receiver styles previously mentioned.

    Yeah it’s confusing.
I’m just gonna stick with PSA parts for my PSA build.

Just waiting for a blemish 308 upper to go on sale, to give my 6.5 CM build some company...I’ll use the same lower for both.

Yeah I was shopping for 308 but the blem complete 6.5CM upper deal was too good to pass up.

Sadly I’ve only put 4 rounds thru it, all at 100 yards.

The first one was way left but was able to walk the other three pretty close, until I froze my ass off...yes, it’s been sitting since last winter

I was gonna shoot more a few weeks ago, but like an idiot I forgot to bring a mag.

that’s almost as bad as forgetting your hearing protection. i went to pop off a few rounds the other day and darn near dropped the goods when the 1st bang rang out. 1st time i’ve done that. i packed it up & went back to the house, called it a day. my ear drums just started feeling normal again after 1 week

you may want to check your AR 10 pattern before you buy other parts. there are mainly 2 different patterns

i would say 3 since the “small Gen-2” frames hit the market.

it’s been cycling ammo & putting rounds downrange since July so i could possibly know what i’m talking about.

do you need pics with desc? or do about 5-more min of research & get it all straightened out on your own accord? let me know

you may want to check your AR 10 pattern before you buy other parts. there are mainly 2 different patterns

this is prob what you are ref to:

“This leaves two main AR10 patterned rifles, the Armalite series and the DPMS series.“

    https://www.ammoland.com/2017/01/4-things-know-building-ar10-80-lower-receiver/#axzz62VOGmmRv

but then there is also this:

Small Frame AR10 vs. Full Size AR10: What's the difference?

    https://www.f4defense.com/4112-2/

The Colt AR-10A was sized closer to todays AR-15 than the full sized AR-10’s/308 AR’s or what is now. Today we refer to this born again class of 308 AR as “Small Frame 308” or “Intermediate Frame 308” . Examples of this would be the DPMS G2, Colt 901, POF Revolution, Zev Tech Small Frame and Adams Arms Small Frame

    https://308ar.com/small-frame-308-ar/

so 2 dif large frames & the small frame .308; that’s 3 at least.

There are 2, colt and lr308, small and large pin. Lower uses ar 15 parts with larger mag well. Gen 2 has different bolt and extension - lugs changed. Upper has been lightened. Mil spec can be dimension, finish, materials or QA. Rifle is heavy carbine not bad.

All you need is YouTube an order parts from midway. I built a Creedmoor from parts there besides the barrel I ordered from ballistic advantage.

Found an Aero Precision lower at a Waxahachie gun show late last year. It had a bad-ass Texas star machined into the magwell.

It was DPMS Gen 2 compatible, but ordered an AP build kit late March and got word today it has finally shipped.

My Bear Creek side charger complete upper arrived last week.

I'm building it specifically for pig hunting and have nightvision gear ready to mount. But looking for a decent piece of glass to put on the 300BO which is donating the nightvision gear.

I try and remember to snap a few pictures as I put it together.
