Never been to the Powderhorn. Just read the reviews, and with the exception of one they get very high marks. Will make it a point to go by there.

Forgot to mention the Junk Bin at Nagel's. I've picked up a few deals there over the years. Last time I picked up about 50 rounds of .38, 357, and .45 for, I think $3.00. All reloadable. Be VERY careful when buying a gun there, though. Had a guy try to sell me a very beat up Mosin-Nagant for "Only" $400, claiming it was a Mauser 98k. I asked him why the bolt handle was straight and he said," That's just a variation."

    Hmmm....

Can't say I'm a fan of Dury's. Wrote a review of them for Google titled, "What a bunch of A--holes!" The Powderhorn has the best sales people I've met so far, with very fair prices. Definitely give them a look.

I gotta agree with the first part of that, the one thing the Powderhorn has over Dury's or Nagel's is they are very attentive towards their customers. Within seconds of setting foot in their store, someone will greet you and ask if there is anything they can help you with. If not, they will leave you alone to look around (which is what I usually do). It is the right balance of being taken care of without being annoying.

But their prices aren't that great, yet neither is any another other shop in SA. If you want a deal, order online or buy privately. But with Hoguns closing, the Powderhorn is pretty much the best shop in town.

I would still like to know where Wayne's gunsmith, Chris, went/is going...

    Cheers! M2

Yes, there are very few "Steals" to be had in any S.A. gun shop. I also recommend the O.P. check out the gun shows. Definitely a few deals to be had there.

Nagel's really surprised me on our last family outing to SA. I've been in there probably 3 times a year for the last 10 years. I had issues being waited on (might be appearance). I'd ask for help most times and get the "We'll be right with you." The only reason I had been going in was for .32acp silvertips for a BUG. They were the only place I could find them at for a while. My son (13 Y.O.) went in with me on the last trip and was looking at the knife displays while I tried to buy .32. There was a lady who waited on him, made small talk with him, and sharpened a knife for him. When I asked her how much the knife sharpening was, she said it would be on the house. I'm glad his first experience with them was better than my previous 29 or so. It's an interesting place. Some of the staff needs a customer svc. lesson. Kudos to the lady that helped my Son. It reminds me of an old sporting goods store that I worked at as a teenager.

Funny that Nagel's was recently mentioned....went by there Saturday, and on a lark asked if they had a Remington 788 in .243. Nothing up front, but the guy went out back and came back with one w/a 3 x 9 Bushnell on it for $595. I told him I was a buyer at $500 - he went and checked, and they accepted the offer! Not a "killer" deal perhaps - but one I was very pleased with. HAD to buy it - had a mag for it in my safe I've kept for years, the original rifle went away durin' the last divorce...

BTW - anyone looking for a double-door safe, Wayne still has his (Hogun's). Says $1250 and it's yours....

Top Ten Gun Shops and San Antonio are two things that generally don't mix in my book. I will add to the Nagel's horror story side. Not sure if I posted it on this forum or not but went in there awhile back and was looking at some of the stuff they got from Krebs and laugh at their prices. When a young guy and his girlfriend walk in and he mentions to the guy behind the counter that he would like to get an AK cause his relatives have problems with hogs on their property and he wanted to take care of it. So, the guy behind the counter pulls out WASR 10, the guy looks at it and says "great, how much?"

*** Now keep in mind, the response this counter worker said, made me spin around so fast to look at this rifle, I coulda called The Hammer to sue them for whiplash ***

    His response: "$800.00"

The guy: "Wow, I thought they go for $400?"

Me in the background trying to see if the guy reads lips as I say: THEY DO THEY DO!!!

    Nagel's worker:"Nope, not that I know of."

Me: Utter Shock at 1) this guy trying to sell a WASR for $800 that DOESNT COME WITH A BLU-RAY PLAYER, that Doesnt come with a 3D TV and 2) that this guy has never seen a WASR go for $400

The Guy: "well what else do you have in that caliber?"

Nagel's worker: "We have a Chinese SKS for $600"

Meanwhile the whole time I am moonwalking, throwing gang signs, and even winking at this Dude's girlfriend to try and get his attention to NOT BUY IN TO THIS!!!

Sadly, I failed, he got the SKS and Ammo, and I had to turn away and run, cause a crime was being committed and I just couldn't watch anymore of it.

But anyways, Powderhorn CAN have some good deals at times, other than that, I wait for Gun Shows OR I plan to go up to Buda once my buddy Scott opens Bulletproof Arms and do all my purchasing up there.

I've seen similar situations as my good friend KaliJuan described, it's even worse at some of the local pawn shops where used guns are almost 50% more than they cost new!

Not everyone has the luxury of forums such as this to get good info before they buy, and no matter what it is bad form to interrupt at a gun shop although I've came close to doing so (and risk being thrown out) when I see such shenanigans as this. Like KaliJuan I save my money for the gun shows or online deals, it's been so long since I bought a firearm from a shop I honestly can't remember when it last was! I believe it may have been my Yugo M48 that was decently priced, so about a year or so ago...

By the way, if anyone wants a $600 Norinco SKS, let me know; I'll save you the tax and sell you one of mine! I've got $600 Yugo SKS rifles as well!

    Cheers! M2

I was at Texas Guns talking about my used Glock 22.....Lmao, the owner said it was worth 600 and sold one to a guy right next to me even AFTER I made the comment that 600 was way too much to charge for mine. I'm not going to sit in a store and protest high prices, but will try preventing someone for being scammed. Nagels sold a coworker of mine a Kimber Warrior. When the pistol came in, the took the Kimberly mags and exchanged some knockoffs that kept causing issues. When he called them out on it, they immediately replaced them.
