I have a switch at work that has a routing problem. Our phones are on a 172 network and the computers are on a 192 network. The dumb switches but the "smart" switches won't pass the phone traffic. If I change the network on the switch a 0.0.0.0 network will it pass all the traffic? My computer guy is not a network guy.

Any help will be appreciated .

Yes, after the firewall is a phone company switch (cisco I think). Was going to try vlan and I don't have routing info.

What if I turn dhcp on the switch.

are you using qos for the phones?

I am a little confused on this
The dumb switches but the "smart" switches won't pass the phone traffic

So does that mean the workstations are on dumb hubs?

Are you already using dhcp or static addresses?

Did your IT guy set all this up?

I am guessing you are using ip phones what is the phone system?

Well the phone company has the gateway, adtran and the first switch. I have the firewall and everything else. Most of the phones are poe and I have bricks for the one outside the switch. The switches that work are 50 dollar plug and play. The one I have a problem with is the HP1624. It will pass the 192 traffic (data) and not the 172 traffic (voice). I do have a Lyksys lgs??? available to use.

My first thought would be vlans on the switch. You could always try a factory reset to turn it into a dumb switch.

What about plugging a computer to a "phone" port mad running some traceroutes? Also try setting the computer ip to what the phone is to see what is causing the drop.

    Switches don't route.
Sure they do, as long as they're a layer 3 switch (and have the appropriate license key installed since most vendors charge extra for that).

The phones that are working, do you know if they are on a separate VLAN? What is the make/model of the switch you're having trouble with?

The info is at work. it is a HP1620-24G. The phone company has set up Cisco switch at the router. they are also using an adtran.

That helps, a little - that switch is a basic L2 switch, so it's not doing any routing. It may, however be configured in a way that is not passing the phone's vlan (assuming your phones are on their own vlan, which you haven't confirmed).

Unfortunately, everything is going to be a hunch without knowing how your network is configured. Simply looking at what equipment is installed is not very useful, these aren't garden hoses that you hook up and water comes out.

I did look at that switch and saw it was a L2 switch 24 port. As stated above L3 switches do route. Keep in mind a different subnet is not the same as a different vlan.

Usually phones are set to a vlan different from data traffic and QOS is setup to give voice traffic priority over data traffic.

So if you are on a phone call and words are missed or it breaks up that is what happens when voice packets are dropped.

The Adtran probably is not important at this point. It might help to post the configuration of your Hp switch and the Cisco router. If you do make sure you remove ANY information that could lead to your network being attacked.

Or of you prefer you could send it in email or something to someone.

As Brains said, it is hard as hell to troubleshoot something like this, someone really needs to be onsite to get this fixed.

My suggestion would be to hire another IT person or your phone vendor to help with this.

Whatever you choose to do this is probably going to cost a few bucks to fix it correctly and as a IT person I hate working on stuff people refuse to fix correctly.

Not trying to be a jerk but I think your issue is more complex than what could be addressed in the forums.

How are the phone ports configured on the switch.

Is the switch to switch interconnect trunked.

Have you checked the cam table on the HP switch to see if the phone mac addresses are populated in the dB.

Can you ping the phones from the pbx

That's the problem i am having. The it guy i have helping is a real good server/active directory/desktop guy. Doesn't do well on the network side. his network guys want the config file from the phone company which they won't provide. The boss doesn't want to get another switch, which the phone company would provide. (its a money thing of course), and i get in trouble because it doesn't work.
I hope the grammar police don't get me to bad on this.

Is the system located in one building or geographically separated and switched over a metro Ethernet circuit?

The switch to switch ports need to be set to trunked and bound if your using more than one port and configured for a vlan in the 172.n.n.n/x subnet.

Log onto both switches and view the can table. See it there’s entries for the macs of the phones and the Mac of the Mac of the trunked port on the other switch.

Pull the configure off the pbx (including thdial plan), and the switches. Redact sensitive info like pw’s and public ips.
