My understanding is that some folks found they couldn't handle the 40 well enough but could do fine with the 9mm. In addition, article after article keeps telling us that modern bullet design is closing the gap in effectiveness. I personally look at it like modern bullet tech isn't only used on 9mm ammo, which means a 40 using similar design parameters and materials would still be more effective. That's just my opinion.

It comes down to the user.

The 40 S&W not only has a touch more recoil but it is a different feeling pulse. It is snappy and affects being able to put shots on target quickly.

Most experienced shooters using full sized handguns won't notice much difference. Keep in mind that a good majority of LEOs aren't experienced shooters and don't shoot much more often than their qualifications.

Try using comparable small handguns like a Glock 26 and 27. You will notice how much longer it takes to get back on target with the 40 S&W.

Not a huge deal at the range but in a competition or fire fight it can be major.

Modern bullet technology and a few extra rounds in the same magazine are helping push the tide back to the 9mm.

I started to like the .40 back during the ammo drought after Sandy Hook. It was still plentiful and it was all that I shot for a good while.

Plus LEO trade-ins can be bought for cheap online or at Gt Distributors.

    Texasgordo,

Haven't had time to go to GT lately. = What have they got right now in .40 S&W & at what prices??
(The Sig 229 at 299.oo from an on-line vendor looks pretty OK to me.)

    yours, satx

Really I haven't been there in a few months now so I don't know what they have. I do remember the .40 P229 and P226 were around $330-$350. The price was the same for the DAK models.

    If you found a P229 for $299 that's still a great price.

    Texasgordo,

Inasmuch as I have to pay some FFL to transfer the pistol, I'd sooner pay GT the 330.oo for the LE trade-in.

I can get behind that but for smaller single stacks, if available, they would get damned snappy.

    To Texasgordo & All,

I'm sorely tempted to just buy a 9x23mm Winchester barrel for my Colt's Government Model in .38 Super. = The 9x23mm WCF is a POWERHOUSE of a cartridge, when compared to 9x19mm Lugar.
(SOME JHP Silvertip factory loads by Winchester are about 1450FPS & near 600FPE.)

Nonetheless, I'm calling GT on Monday to "shop for" a Sig 229 with Night Sights. - I already have a suitable LH holster & magazine pouches that will work with the 229.

    yours, satx
