This discussion began as a query about how many carry a tourniquet during their daily lives in a civilian environment, and quickly went to the potential likelihood of a need for those tourniquets.

"Battlefields" were not included, but came later.

Of course, in wartime combat environment, there is a completely different situation. The potential for all sorts of serious injuries is greatly increased.

I would never advise anyone to enter military combat without the best equipment available, BUT that is a different situation from our daily peacetime lives.

Consider the potential need for milspec heavy body armor in our daily lives?

My PC with level 4 plates, and no side plates or mags weighs close to 15lbs.

1 tq weighs a couple of oz.

    Yes, I know.

That's why I chose it to illustrate.

Many of us experienced Physicians carry an "airway assist device" of one kind or another; which would be hundreds of times more likely to actually be needed in civilian life.

    I don't personally know any M D who carries a tourniquet.

The airway aids, too, weigh little.

Its a poor comparison to use to argue against having a tq. A tq is small, cheap, light, and easy to find training on how to use it. Most stop the bleed classes don't teach how to use airway tubes

Eta, that said, if you know how to use one, rock on

Officer ran back to his unit and grabbed a dog leash, instead of the tourniquet from the first aid kit.
He stated he did so because it was quicker to access, and would be just as effective.

I am on a small facebook gun group and the topic of Tourniquet came up. Someone was shocked that I have never owned one - to which I replied I've barely even considered one, let along own or carry one. I said I'd guess over half the people, maybe up to 75% of people who carry, don't even own one.

I threw a poll up in this small group. Some LE, some military, mostly all of us are your gung-ho gun guys. It's been less than 24 hours and 46 have said they have them, and only 7 said they have never owned one.

Did a quick search here and it's only been mentioned once - someone was selling a tourniquet holster.
Searched on CalGuns, where I was active for a number of years and never recall it being mentioned. Low and behold there were a million threads.

I barely even carry a spare mug half the time. I joked and said what's next? Going to a steakhouse with the family, have a backpack with IV, syringe, AED. Maybe daily drive an ambulance?

Anyhow - curious to see where you all stand.

I do always keep my go bad / medical bag fully stocked one in each of my personal vehicles. I would definitely recommend it just in case its needed for you or someone else.

I have a small trauma kit with a tourniquet that hangs behind the headrest of the passenger seat in my vehicle. Got it after taking a first aid class designed to deal with trauma/active shooter events.

No, that can not be right. We even had a doctor here say he had never used one in all his years. To be fair, a belt would have worked just as well.

Damn straight. I always have a belt and a screwdriver in the truck to cinch it up.

As a semi-retired Med School Prof and an ex-Emergency Physician, I see little practical use for tourniquets.

Life threatening bleeding should be controlled by firm pressure on the injury, just between the source of the bleeding and the heart, but much closer to the bleeding.

Only massive bright red bleeding from an extremity injury would be indication for a tourniquet. That is a pretty rare situation.

I guess you should seek some training in this modern era.

    tact,

As a recently trained emergency/medically trained M.D. that I know you are, I value your highly esteemed opinion over one of those old M.D.'s.

    You go girl!
