Since we can't abolish the types of people in our society who commit mass shootings and other nasty things altogether, the least we can do is learn how to protect ourselves properly and efficiently.

What programs are available to offer such self-defense training for all the various threats that may be encountered in 2019 and beyond?

There are many potential threats against life, personal liberty and limb in our society:

    1. conventional crimes: kidnapping, robbery, assault, battery, murder, rape, sexual assault, desertion (stealing horses and cars, for example, to leave the vehicle/animal owner to die in a remote area as a desert), gang violence, mob violence

    2. new-age threats: terrorism, mass shootings, mass murder with vehicles, attacks with airplanes, attacks with bombs

People have to know how to defend themselves and loved ones at home and away from home.

Besides being armed and trained with defensive handguns, rifles and shotguns, people need to establish layers of security. Locks and deadbolts on doors. Watch dogs. Cameras.

People need to learn how to immediately recognize a threat and properly react to it: if I were to suddenly hear BANG! BANG! inside a Walmart, my instinct would be to take cover, get as low as possible. I was soldier in the army but most American citizens have no military or tactical law-enforcement experience. The handgun one carries would be a last resort once a covered position was secured. In the army when were were in tactical field training environments, we would carry our M16 weapons at port arms. The rule was to lay down suppressive fire once a threat was recognized while seeking cover quickly. John Q. Pubic does not normally walk around with his handgun at the ready, it's concealed on his person somehow. The element of suppressive fire doesn't work for citizens who carry handguns. In this age of mass shootings, we will need new training and doctrine in regards to personal security and defensive countermeasures for possible threats.

Defensive firearms instructors who train citizens for carry need to address the modern threat issues.

You can’t train sheep. Their nature is to run away. Few of us have the propensity toward violence. What you can do is train the violent ones among us not to be malignant. Or barring that put the really dangerous ones among us in jail. The problem is we miss the telltale signs of those dangerous people. I think they can be saved with proper mentorship and care. Something as simple as learning honor thru an ROTC program may be enough.

"Threats?!?" If we're being honest here, mass shootings are one of the lowest likelihoods of a person being killed in this country. If anyone is worried about "surviving," then the should first look at their diet and exercise habits (heart disease causes 30.2% of the deaths in this country), other things they consume that they shouldn't (cancer accounts for 29.5%), learning to drive and keep their vehicles roadworthy (vehicle accidents account for 7.6%) and other things in general...

While I am all for using the media hype as an excuse to buy more firearms, I know that it's just rhetoric and not factually-based.

I carry for the same reason I wear a seatbelt and wore a reserve parachute when I jumped out of planes and helicopters, the old philosophy that "It's better to have and not need, than to need and not have."

And I do believe in keeping educated to potential threats and maintaining situational awareness when in public; but I shun tin hats and the belief that the possibility of being a victim of an active shooter incident is a huge probability. There are far too many things more likely to be concerned about than that!

Situational awareness X 3. We want to pick up on anomalies in the given environment we are in. What does not fit?
We then want a plan in place - IF this happens THEN I will do this.
Then get relevant training when possible.

Number 1 rule, wear a t shirt and carry a stick.

There are several incidents of LTC holders stopping mass shootings. The media just doesn’t want you to remember them.
This is the shit that pisses me off to no end!! Armed citizens have made a difference and saved lives. The media wont cover it because it doesn't fit their agenda. When an LTC holder stops someone before he kills people its not newsworthy. But when some whacko kills 20 plus people unchallenged it's a great day for those sorry phuckers!!

The first step in fixing the problem is keeping violent criminals off the street by longer prison terms and the death penalty in full swing for repeat offenders. That 3rd rape and your get to become bacon err wait I guess its night night meds now.

We could free up tons of space if we deport all the non citizens from the prisons for drug charges. I would much rather see a violent dude behind bars than someone popped with a lb of pot.

There’s a common fallacy that we can enact laws to stop shitty people from doing shitty things.

Freedom and security are on two opposing ends of a spectrum; they’re inversely related.
    Increasing one decreases the other.

We need to decide what that balance is.

I’d rather have more freedom, and a responsibility for my own security.

Shady has it right- swift justice for all criminals and speedy executions for mass murderers. The left has been eroding and trying to destroy the rule of law since the Supreme court rulings of the 50s and 60s. Rape used to be- and should be- a capital crime. It is all part of a plan to destroy America by going easy on crime and destroying our institutions. . And no more letting the mentally ill just wander the streets and live in the gutters and alleyways. And we also need to start executing drug dealers. Our war on drugs has failed. De-criminalize possession, but execute anyone caught selling. And we need to burn the poppy fields. America needs to be a place where law-abiding citizens can walk down the streets with their families again. AND ALWAYS CARRY everyday- you don't know when you might need it.
