I dunno, after reading a ton of stuff and out of all the classes I have taken by squared away guys, I never considered point shooting. I get a flash sight picture but to me if you want hits on target, you use your sights for anything over 5 feet.

There are certain things the body begins to do after the release of adrenaline in hight stress situations auditory exclusion and tunnel vision are 2 of them. Can It be trained out? Yep but I found it requires a lot more training than most average people do and most seem to default to their lowest level of training rather than rising to the occasion.

What's your background, mil, leo, competitive shooting/3 gun, etc?

LE, some instructing, and a bit of competitive shooting though I got my clock cleaned most often in the competition.

city, county, state, or fed LEA? no need for details, just asked to get an idea of your training :)

Speaking of target fixation, I've witnessed three separate incidents during dove hunts that came within a hairs breadth of a disaster of epic proportions. One, a decorated small agency LEO (DEA SWAT Sniper School, UC Narc, etc), was surprised by a dove that overflew the field without being seen until 20-30 feet away and in our faces. He swung the muzzle in an arc about head high tracking the bird, fired, missed the and kept shooting. The man and his son were sitting in lawn chairs roughly 15 feet away by the front of their truck. Rob shot out all the windows of the guys truck, all the drivers side body panels, rearview mirrors, and shot out the front, side, and rear windows as well as the rearview mirror and drivers side body panels.

The last shot during that incident was from less than 10 feet and blew the tailgate off. He just bought the truck a month or two earlier.

He's gonna read this and give me crap for posting it, no doubt :)

City for 9, county for 10. Instructed at both. I shot some matches and guys from INS and FBI would always seem to win. Yeah, gun fighting and hunting are not the same but obviously you don't go dove hunting to shoot a car. I've always tried to post analyze some shootings. No one ever does everything right. Something about people trying to kill you screws you up.

Gun fighting and hunting aren't the same thing, no doubt, but a good duck hunt when the birds are working hard is in some respects just as intense, even though they're not shooting back.

fwiw, the duck hunting portrayed on duck dynasty is not an accurate representation of waterfowl hunting, certainly not here in Texas and the upper N East and N West.

I noticed you're in Dallas. You do any bird hunting; dove, waterfowl, quail, turkey.....?

After many thousands of repetitions, bringing the gun up to eye level and taking a shot can look- to an outsider- like you never used the sights. You did, but it looks like point shooting. You have to train your body to have a good natural point of aim such that your gun is pointing at your target without you having to force it. You also have to train to trust the flash sight picture and take the shot. You have to train your hands to not let anything move but the trigger finger -straight back. This takes time and concentration- until you get to the point where you can do it without concentration.

unless you’re rich, or Uncle Sam is buying the ammo, I advocate laser training simulators.
