I have 2 restaurants I must visit when I’m in San Antonio. Mi Tierra, and LuLu’s.
You really like LuLu's? The big cinnamon roll is great but the chicken fried steak always gave me bubble guts. I didn't go back after the second time.

If anyone likes ceviche then 210 Ceviche is a great place.

Taquitos West Avenue is a great spot for street tacos.

    Taco Cabana you heathens

I, long ago, used to eat at the actual original Taco Cabana that was in a repurposed Dairy Queen at San Pedro and McCullough.
Ya, as a kid in the 70s.
    Is it still there?

Taco Cabana continues to be consistent and predictable.
    That is an OK thing.

I'd been thinking hard to remember a fine TX-Mexican place a buddy took me at 1AM a year ago when I was staying near SATX airport for a symposium.
    A-Ha!! Found it.

    Los Balitos.
A hole in the wall in a strip center.
Been there years and open 24/7/365 it seems.
Was quite excellent and I think quite authentic.
A very positive-predictor metric was that none of the employees spoke much English.
Brought back some primal memories from my youth.

Years ago while in San Antonio a friend dragged to Bill Millers. He was on his phone just before we went in & I watched this police take down in the lot. I was pretty impressed how it went & getting to see it live. He didn't even notice it.

I thought the food was ok. He said you use to be able to go in at closing time & they would load you up rather the throw it out.

Peter El Norteno’s: On Fredricksburg Rd just north of downtown.

My favorite mom/pop Mexican food for lunch.

Lunch specials depend on what day you go but they all include tea. $5.99 fajitas, $5.99 CFS, $5.99 burger fries (great burger), $3.99 burger/fries and more. (Downside, no free chips/salsa, but I’m okay with that.)

    Great salsa and tortillas.

Favorite wings: Wing Daddy’s Sauce House

Thick breaded wings. Great sauce selection. They let you sample the sauces first.

Popular sauces with my family: Cajun and Blasphemous Bacon. (I ask for fresh cilantro flakes to be sprinkled onto the Blasphemous Bacon.(

    The Big Country
    Lulu's.
Ok, have not been there in years.

Is there even a close second in the absurd-big-cinnamon-roll category?

Is there an association with SA's high diabetic incidence?
Breakfast like this probably helps with that.

    Unaddressed sub-category.....

    German food.
In San Antonio I have no idea.

Quite authentic is Friesenhaus right off I35 on Seguin in New Braunfels. Ten miles from San Antonio on your way to tube the Comal this weekend!!!

Sadly, the hard working German immigrant owners lost their green card and had to leave the US.

It's been bought by some locals who want to keep it authentic.

Best is the 20 taps of very authentic German brews. No IPAs or foo-foo fruity beers. Generally serve in correct brand specific glassware with correct coasters....very European correctness. Go there. Nick and Brian will treat you right!!!

The Rubin with a side of bacon-fried German potatoes or red cabbage or spaetzle is to die for!!!!

I'll drive down there any time!!!!!
