I shoot pistols indoors. The closest outdoor range is twice as far away.

    BTW, I couldn't shoot yesterday, because I don't have a driver's license.

And I have a BRAND new.38 Special just begging to be broken in.

I am an outdoor range guy. Most of the fun of shooting is being outdoors.
The outdoor range where I regularly shoot opens at 8:00 am during the summer months. I get there just as they open. The day is new, the weather is nice, and best of all, I generally have most of the range to myself.
No worry about newbie shooters or waiting for the range officers to call the range hot or a cease fire.

I have shot at several indoor ranges in the past. I find them too dark. The air is filled with powder smoke, unless the range has a 50 mph AC system blowing down your neck. There also seems to be more spent casings on their concrete floors. One thing I do like about an indoor range is you can retrieve your target without going downrange.

This is another of those situations where there is no right way. If you prefer the indoor ranges, I say hurrah.
That means you won't be crowding the outdoor ranges where I prefer to visit. Win-win all around.

For me, it depends entirely on the weather.

All things being equal, I like being outside.

One thing about outdoor ranges over indoor is that I can draw from my holster, most indoor don't allow that.

The closest outdoor ranges to Round Rock, that I know of, still involve a good 20 or 30 mile drive or so from there. The Firing Line, North of Georgetown, is probably the closest. Best of the West in Liberty Hill, and Lonestar Range and Academy a few miles past Liberty Hill on 183 N. Also Eagle Peak in Leander.

    Thanks I’ll check those out

Because I shoot handguns more than rifles, I prefer indoor ranges. Besides, it gets a little warm and humid here in Houston in the summer (May-November). Outdoor ranges are best for most rifles but the most accessable one around here (Carter's Country) is very unfriendly to shooters (wants you to load one round at a time, even if from a magazine).

  That's the nuttiest thing I've ever heard. Maybe there's a reason there is no market for a single-shot AR.

I prefer outdoor ranges except for one thing, buffalo gnats!! They eat me alive at my range and treat 99% DEET buy spray like marinade on a t-bone.

Never heard of buffalo gnats, and I’ve been bitten by quite a lot of different bugs in my life. Are those the same as the little biting gnats? They use to drive me crazy around this time of year when I lived in FL and along the MS Gulf Coast. Avon Skin So Soft worked great against those little demons, but not so great against deer fly, mosquitoes, and chiggers, though.

We called them Bull Gnats when I was kid.

Definitely outdoors, as Mother Nature intended. :) Firing a gun indoors just ain't natural. Brass bouncing off the walls of the cubby. You can't see what any of the other shooters are doing. Way too loud. But if that's all you got....
I don't know too many outdoor ranges that are easy for wheelchair-bound folks to use. Placing targets out for long-range rifle just isn't going to happen. But having access to a nice indoor range makes shooting possible for me again.

The only place I've gone to shoot so far is an outdoor range Cedar Ridge. I'm supposed to meet some people this week at an indoor range, Nardis (original). We'll see how I handle the noise of an indoor range!
