She actually did ok and said she had fun. Lots of leaning back far
Like a lot of girls do.

She liked the Browning Buckmark and even shot the 9mm Glock 34. Grip was not fantastic but we can work on that. Said she had fun and she hit the target most of the time.

Photo is right after her first shots.

If it were up to me, and it's not, we would require all children to take firearms safety classes and also be required to pass a basic firearms proficiency test.

Learn and know all the basic safety rules, like, treat every firearm as if is loaded, trigger discipline, etc.

Be able to hit a target, at moderate range, with both a pistol and a rifle.

The part of my rules I can't come to a solid decision on, is at what age? I'm currently leaning on 10 -12....

    What do you think?

Age of kids is a very difficult number to lock down, since kids are all over the map maturity wise. My daughter has been helping me hand load since she was 5, and started shooting and cleaning guns at 7. My youngest son is now 5 but too rambunctious for anything but basic safety instruction (e.g. Eddie Eagle type training). His desire is there, but I'm not sure at what age he'll be ready.

Definitely believe in education being the key. If you know how something works and what it is capable of, you're far more likely to be proficient and safe with it. Works for lots of things - power tools, guns, electricity, vehicles, etc.

I started teaching my oldest daughter at 5. Gun safety and how to aim and shoot the rifle. She's a bit of a scatter brain, so just small bits at a time. She shoots with me sometimes, but still not mature enough to do it on her own. I stick to air rifles for the moment. We use a Weihrauch HW-35 break barrel. I plan to buy her a Henry .22lr mini youth for her birthday this year and teach her safety and shooting on that this year though.

I don't remember when they stopped, but the old Soviet Union and the new Russia used to require passing this test before graduating high school:

Took my youngest out yesterday to put some rounds through a S&W M&P 15-22 I picked up.

She has been asking when she gets her own rifle so I figured this would suit her well for the time being.

As she learns more about the modularity of the AR15 types of rifles I realized I have created a monster. Showing her better sights, triggers, stocks, and other parts may have been a mistake.

She loves her some range time though.
