Are there any prefered local dealers ?

Is the monthly Marbach area gun show a good place to make a cash sale to a vendor ?

I went to the gun show there 4 years ago and found it very crowded but did not see any deals happening. I've not been to the Austin Hwy gun show.

I've got a half dozen handguns (no rifles) to sell. Seems I'm spending my free cash on camera gear these days so some unused things need to go.

Feel free to PM me if you have good/bad personal statements about any gun store. I remember the time I left my HR revolver with a gun store for a repair and it was 18 months before I got it back. They said their gunsmith took it apart then quit. Well, stuff happens I suppose.

    Gunz are icky.
Selling to a shop or table vendor at a show, you’ll lose your shirt. They’ll scalp you.
If you’re not in a rush to sell post here in the classified section.
Be realistic on your price and your items will usually sell in a reasonable time.
Be prepared for the lowballer. They’ll certainly try you.

Do it. I started counting and I've bought at least 13 guns off of members on here. If you've got normalish stuff, it's pretty easy to find a reasonable starting price. Weird or desirable stuff can be all over the map. Hell, ask questions. If you listed a Glock 19 and a P7 at $450, somebody would set you straight I hope.

Yes, some buyers will low ball.

Sellers often want a mere pittance less than new.

Not very realistic of them to want $25.00 to $50.00 less than new and you have no idea how truthful they are regarding 'only 100 rounds or less shot with this gun' or if they cleaned it improperly or any number of things that aren't good for a gun...

Were I to buy a used every day gun, it would have to a very good deal or fuhgeddaboudit!

I agree. I got the most responses from Texas Gun Trader and I even ended up selling one of my rifles from there. There was some interest from Armslist also.

TexasGunTrader is hit or miss. I have had great experiences from it, and some complete flakes. Practice due diligence if you go that route (see below for details), as like eBay anyone can be on that website.

As for the SAXET show, you can privately sell firearms there but it's a pain to carry more than one or two. Numerous people do so, and make up cardboard signs to advertise. Don't try to sell to vendors, you won't get anywhere near the value of the weapon. They are simply trying to make a quick profit. The Austin Highway show is the same, but much smaller (around 200 tables compared to 800+) and it most likely won't be as lucrative for you.

As for gun stores consignments, you'll lose money on those as well. They are primarily marketing new and their used guns to make the most profit, so there's no incentive for them to sell your used firearms. Best to be avoided.

Honestly, advertising here is your best bet. You may still have some haggling to deal with, but that will be the case with any private sale. It's also much safer, but I would still recommend taking the usual precautions if you don't know the buyer. I am talking about meeting in a public place during the daytime and perhaps asking to see a drivers or handgun license, not a bill of sale. Those are useless unless notarized and unnecessary as once the transaction is complete you are not legally liable for what the new owner does with the firearm. You also don't want the responsibility of protecting another person's personally identifiable information (PII) if it can be avoided.

With any private sale, use your cranium. If the person acts suspicious or you are uncomfortable with any aspects of the transaction, walk away; but for the most part (especially if it is with someone from this forum) it will be an easy and painless event. The only "downside" I have experienced is that a simple five-minute transaction regularly turns into a half hour or more of chit chatting about firearms!

Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions as I am in Helotes and have a lot of experience with gun shops, stores and ranges in the San Antonio area...

    Cheers! M2

If I were WTS or WTB, I would list both here and on TxGunTrader. Depending on the item, I have also done some transactions on SigTalk.com and M4Carbine.net. I rely heavily on transaction feedback at the forums listed above.

As far as FTF transactions go, I am very cautious with TxGunTrader and only meet in public places where the sight of a firearm would not cause alarm such as the parking lot at Red's. I would never buy anything from listings there that need to be shipped.

My trade rating doesn’t reflect it do to a wipeout on the site years ago, but I’ve had many great transactions by just using the classifieds here on TGT.

I have had pretty good luck with Texas Gun Trader, both buying and selling. You can eliminate some online just through emails. Meeting at gun ranges is a good idea. When selling I usually meet at my local HEB in the side lot somewhere. I have also used the local police stations parking areas as well. They suggested this for safety when using Craigslist. This seems to deter some shady characters as well. I have even bought from officers there (Shotgun, slugs, buckshot, rifle and pistol ammo). As with anything you have to use your head and protect yourself. One thing I do is to drive around a little afterwards to insure no one is following me home.
