I didn't realize we had met before.

The maintenance man thing is not a bad idea at all. When I did that kind of work, repair was almost always preferred to replacing.

I've learned over the years to never trust AC guys. I'm sure there's honest AC people out there. I've just never run across one. When it comes to ACs, they love to sell you a new ons.

Good point about the volt meter, you're right. The reason I said kill the main breaker is that I've seen some accidentally grab the end and touching the screws when trying to pull out the old breaker or push the new one in.

    That's what I was wondering.

All the a/c breakers I have seen are in their own dedicated box next to a/c unit.

If the a/c breaker was in the main panel, I stand corrected and you are definitely right.

While the mention of the start capacitor is worthwhile and sometimes will be why an a/c unit won't start (and it is a cheap fix), a bad start capacitor would not normally cause the breaker to trip.

It's an old joke, short version....

Guy goes to the doctor, doctor tells him that he doesn't have long to live.
Guy says, well Doc, I'd like to get a second opinion.
Doctor says, OK, you're ugly too.

You may want a second opinion.

Agreed. Preferably one who's tech's don't work on any sort of commission.

That's the disconnect at the AC. There is still a breaker (or a few) in the panel. The AC unit isn't hooked up directly to the transformer on the pole. Power to the house all comes through the panel, then goes out through the breakers.

No....I've seen quite a few with breakers at the outside compressor. Newer builds generally have the disconnects - but for a while, they were doing breakers there, too.

In that case you would still have a breaker in the panel. The wire needs to be protected from the source.

All of the a/c units I have worked on have an actual breaker in the external box, not just a disconnect. But again, perhaps some installations are different.

I do see quite a few fused AC disconnects, the rationale being the circuit breaker in the main panel protects the wiring, while fuses can be selected to give better protection response for the load (motor/condenser).

I've seen breakers, fuses, and disconnects---but always a breaker in the main house to cut power to the A/C system. I've also seen electricians do the unexpected regularly, from leaving twisted wires sticking up in the attic to wiring an electric stove off a 20a breaker, and a hot water tank off twin 50s. The rule is test everything and don't trust anything without testing it. 220 will get your undivided attention...and 110 kills more people.

Unless your a/c man's tried and trusted, I'd back up what he says by calling your electrician to check the supply. Your home/family's worth the trouble.
