New to the Austin area. Starting to think about an outdoor range to start teaching our six year old grandson to shoot. Wondering if anyone recommends the Best of the West range in Liberty Hill.

Don't need anything too fancy for this though always nice to have an RSO on-site to control a firing line.

Can anyone provide feedback on this range, how it operates, safety practices at the range, etc?

I like it a lot. But I always use the private "tactical bays" so I have my own area and don't have to worry about other shooters so much. Other than a guy in a golf cart watching to make sure your not an idiot is about as far as it goes for a RSO.

I think the bay is 20 bucks for 3 hours if I remember right. That may also be per shooter.

Its a very popular and nice range. The governor and other big names have been known to stop in on occasion.

    BotW has multiple avenues:

A very long rifle range. Don't know much about it other than it appears nice.
About 14 shooting bays. Shoot what you want. There is no RSO. Don't shoot yourself. Don't shoot other people. Life is good.
A pistol line. I haven't seen an RSO there.
    A nice looking shotgun setup.

The bays are the best for short range. Shoot what you want.

Watch out for that libtard wiener dog lover on IDPA Sundays. I heard he's a kook.

I haven't been a lot but have always seen a RSO at the rifle line. Always been pleasant though.

Thanks everyone for feedback. Sounds like it's well worth a visit and will head over there soon. How deep are the tactical shooting bays?

We have our grandson in Taekwondo already. He's been learning how to sit still and listen, address his teachers by Sir and Ma'am, follow instructions, and gradually develop skills to defend himself. All good stuff.

Looking forward to teaching him how to shoot soon. It doesn't matter to me if he becomes an avid gun buff though would really like him to know basic gun handling rules and safety. Would be an added bonus if he grows to enjoy shooting as much as I do.

As an aside I noticed on the range website there's an affiliated business at the range called Ballistic Ops which specializes in full auto rentals. It's been a couple years since I had the pleasure of shooting an MP5. Will have to check them out.

I would say they go from 30-50 yards but I have not used them all :)
