The lodging idea is new ground that no one knows how it will go over. I go to the range and stay all day with lunch and drinks packed. I watch people come and go and never end up at closing time with the people I started the morning with, so I don't know how many would go and how often. You can't make a living with once or twice a year people. I don't think you are close enough to enough population to support it but I could be wrong. Around Abilene, San Angelo and the rural areas most folks either have or know of a free place to shoot. The ranges close enough to urban areas are the ones that are full of shooters, Red's Indoor range in Pflugerville usually has a wait for a lane unless you go during the middle of the work day, they are nice folks though. Best Of The West is 25 minutes from me so that is where we go, they have everything in one huge facility and are expanding.

Do you very long range shooters take into account: Spin Drift and the Coriolis Effect?

To help you adjust your missed shots, do you look for swirl and splash?

Do you take into account how much gravity affects LD shots, plus a variety of wind velocities and directions all over the distance to the target?

If the above is something you take into account with each shot, are your optics up to the challenge?

If so, I have great admiration for you.

    Yes, even at 25 yards.

Clearing 1000 yds is the simple part.
Deciding on layout. Offset from center for different distances and elevations.
It's gotten technical and complicated. Once some decisions are made, I'll get back to the simple task of moving dirt.

How tall do you plan to make the berm at each target distance?

I'm not sure. I haven't decided for sure which distances will get a target and which won't.
I'm pretty sure I'm not going to build 10 independent berms. Maybe 6 different targets out to 1000.
I know that I want the 100 to be fun for beginners. "Bunny slope" stuff. Lol. Lots of different reaction targets and paper target stands.

    I'm open to suggestions.

    I was just curious.

I started to go through google earth/elevation a while back and figure out the amount of clearance at the different ranges. Shit I used to know how to do but probably have smoke coming out of my ears figuring it out now.

I would say offer both a steel and paper target for the longer range. Nothing fancy, but the ability to figure out the DOPE and group size on paper for load work up, and hear a hit on steel for general practice/wind calls/etc.

At 100 I'd say something like 12", 6", and 3" steel, and a rack that allows hanging random coke bottles, bowling pins, etc. A balloon anchored off with a string to an old broom stick could be a fun target in the wind. Might be pretty interesting at 300-400 as well.

I'm thinking the ability to attach a piece of dollar store foam board to a stand at longer ranges would be pretty nice.

I have only shot to 1000 yards. Some of that stuff doesn't come in to play until beyond that.

I hope to have to worry about it someday though.

    Younggun,

Because the foam board will explode upon impact, giving the shooter immediate feedback of a hit or ?

No. At least, I hope not. Lol.

Mostly because bullets are dropping very fast at 1000 yards and the wind can do a lot. Especially is you are stretching something like .308 to its limit.

The foam board gives you a fairly large backing that won't tear off in the wind and is pretty cheap. Keeping on a standard size target sheet would be pretty darn good at 1k, the foam board would just make it easier to see where you're missing.
