Dual Survival' star stripped of SF Association membership

Former Marine Joe Teti, shown in Sri Lanka filming an episode of the Discovery Channel's popular 'Dual Survival' show, has been stripped of his membership in the Special Forces Association. (Discovery Channel)

Discovery Channel’s “Dual Survival” reality star Joseph Teti, a former Army and Marine Corps special operator, has been disavowed by the Special Forces Association and stripped of his membership with the group.

“He is no longer a member and cannot rejoin,” retired Army Col. Jack Tobin, president of the association, told Military Times.

The association’s National Board made the decision after some two dozen current and former Special Forces soldiers came forward with allegations of misconduct against Teti. In the group’s 50-year history, only 10 members have gotten the boot.

Although Tobin declined to discuss the specifics of Teti’s removal, the group’s bylaws allow for membership to be revoked for lying about their Special Forces credentials or any “actions, deeds, or behavior by a member which brings discredit, humiliation, or embarrassment upon the Association.”
Teti and Discovery Channel did not respond to several requests for comment.

Teti, however, was clearly proud of his membership with the group. Until recently, it was the first entry listed under “professional affiliations” in the biography section of his personal website.

Teti has been at the center of a growing storm over his military and combat duty claims since joining Dual Survival last year. He replaced David Canterbury, another Army veteran on the popular survival show, after allegations surfaced that Canterbury lied about sniper and airborne qualifications.
Teti has faced far more controversy, however, including allegations that he misrepresents himself as a “combat veteran” despite never serving in combat while in the military.

In an April interview with Military Times, Teti defended his claims to combat experience, saying he served as a contractor in a highly classified special operations unit.

Teti said he served in Force Recon as a Marine and later served as an enlisted Green Beret in the Army National Guard, leaving military service shortly after the 9/11 attacks to pursue work as a private contractor.

“Never have I said that I served in the military in Iraq or Afghanistan,” he said at the time. “I want to clear the record right now. I was in a government counterterrorism unit doing direct action missions right alongside Tier 1 assets.”

He insisted the government unit in which he served was so secret that he was barred from even discussing it. “Don’t even guess about it because that will get you in big trouble. Don’t even take liberties at guessing because you’re actually crossing a legal line right there. ... I am not at liberty to discuss — ethically, legally, morally — who I worked for,” he said.

Special Forces Association members are applauding the move to take Teti off the group’s rolls.

“He’s an embarrassment to the Regiment, because of the falsehoods, lies and embellishments he’s used in association with his Special Forces qualifications,” says retired Army Sgt. Maj. George Davenport, a “life member” of the organization.

Among Teti’s lies, says Davenport, are claims that he was a graduate of the Special Forces Combat Diver and Special Forces Sniper courses.
“I personally checked with the Special Forces schools and he did not go to those courses. There is no record of him attending,” says Davenport, founder of the “Special Forces Poser Patrol” Facebook page, which added Teti to the group’s “Wall of Shame” Sept. 30 in the wake of the SFA’s decision.

Says everything you need to know. If you were SF, no need to lie about the specific schools you made it through. Also, I think the SF units in the ARNG are a recent thing (as of a few years ago).

I'll never understand why some people can't just be proud of what they actually did while in uniform.
Often they were marginal soldiers. Just because you passed the course does not mean you can apply the knowledge or have an attitude/personality that can perform with your contemporaries. In the case of many service schools they have a tendency to protect their own. Your passed the school, but failed at fitting in and you find yourself on the easy and odd assignments. While the rest of the guys are out on the front lines you find yourself back at HQ or some other remote place counting MRE's to be shipped to the guys out there.

I did an analysis of Jesse Ventura and IMO found him to be a marginal soldier. For example he did go on the clearly difficult assignments, while his buddies were around the world he seemed to have some ind of job in a low capacity in a safe place. I was able to find parts of his DD214 and -2 on line and it gave me a lot of insight. He was a SEAL and passed the course, went to parachute school and passed that, but as far as him being a operative he saw little if any 'action' and got out. I suspect he might well have run into some issues with his security clearance due to his involvement with a known motorcycle gang. I have seen guys who got their security clearance pulled and left to just float like a ship without a rudder or engine. Finding jobs in the military they do not require a clearance can be difficult and often translates into some serious soft duty...being the Post Gym NCOIC or OIC. I worked for a Capt who was the Asst Bde S-4 who lost his security clearance. He was assigned as the OIC of the Bde Gym. He soon left the military.

I could see that, and I couldn't imagine the bs involved after losing a clearance. That was something I always had in the back of my mind, my MOS required a secret clearance (I'm assuming because I worked on the TOW/SABER missile systems) and an AA&E screening because I worked in the armory, if I had lost those my MOS would have been pulled and it would have been company office slave for the remainder of my enlistment.

I had met a genuine Green Beret from Vietnam. Who had been in combat. The one thing he didn't do was brag.

Its hard to explain his demeanor of the world. He practiced being at peace.

I don't know about all the reported lies or anything but it's not like this means Teti wasn't SF. He was. This means the guys in the SF club kicked him out because they didn't like him. Captain Mykel Hawke of Man, Woman, Wild and Lost Survivors has been feuding with Tedi, he was actually Tedi's commander for a while, and supposedly was leading the charge for this. Maybe Tedi is a lowlife but he was SF and to me this looks like just another move in an ongoing feud and is really more sad than anything.

Teti should be glad that the SF guys don't treat him like some SEALS that I know.

When these guys find out about SEAL posers, they hunt them down and make wish that they were never born. (These are usually braggarts at bars trying to bag babes)
No one gets into their Brotherhood unless they EARNED it.

The dude may be a total waste but this is smelling like a pr Job to me. Someone calling himself Mykel Hawke has been making the rounds of several forums leaving comments about this event. Comments that include blaming Teti for the death of crewmembers from dual survival in a helicopter crash, a accusation Hawke has made publicly before. Maybe it isn't Hawke but it sure sounds like him and he has been all over the Internet with crap like that for 2 years. This should not be taken as anything but Teti losing a popularity contest.

I'll never understand why some people can't just be proud of what they actually did while in uniform.

I don't think it's that. The last military guy for the show, Dave Canterbury, admitted he lied on his application because the competition was fierce and he wanted the job. Apparently it worked. If Teti lied (I have no idea) then I guess it worked for him, too, though you'd think Discovery would have learned from that the first time.

Let's tally up the Dual Survival fuckups:

1.) Not doing a thorough enough background check on Dave Canterbury,
2.) Not doing a thorough enough background check on his replacement, Teti.
3.) Firing Cody Lundin because he refused to do something he thought was unsafe, then dragging his name through the mud publicly.

I wonder what's next. Maybe that hippie guy that replaced Lundin is actually a wealthy Monsanto executive who lives in Beverley Hills.

His quotes instantly triggered memories of Gecko45.

“Don’t even guess about it because that will get you in big trouble. Don’t even take liberties at guessing because you’re actually crossing a legal line right there. ... I am not at liberty to discuss — ethically, legally, morally — who I worked for,” he said.

Sounds like something a drunken bullshitter would say at a bar. "Dude, don't even try to guess what I did. If my handlers found out they'd make you disappear like (snaps fingers) that!"
