It seems to that Varget and RL15 are almost the same when it comes to performance and load data. As far as hog or deer hunting goes I really like Barnes Bullets.

I started loading for my AR several years ago (no harmonic balancer) and using the same bullet (same profile, same weight, etc.) loaded several loads at .2 gr. increments. When finally tested at 100 yds., groups went from about 1 3/4" down to 7/16" and then back up to about 1 1/4". The load my carbine liked best was with 26.1 grs. of Varget. (I loaded 9 rounds each of 25.5 grs., 25.7 grs, 25.9 grs., 26.1 grs., 26.3 grns., etc.) Obviously it loved the 26.1 best of all! I'm content with that!

did you let the barrel cool between changes?
I'm interested in the cold bore results myself as a hunter, that is what counts

I did. It was hot weather when I did it so it ever wasn't "cold" between groups but not extremely hot. I've since found a little 12vdc air compressor that plugs in the truck cigar lighter or accessory plug supposed to be used to air up flats on the road that I think I'm going use with a small hose attached to blow air through the barrel to cool it a little faster. 'Just thinking about it. I shoot three shot groups in about 7 to 10 seconds and three groups with each load (sometimes two, etc.) I don't get in a hurry. I'll let you know how my little fan works.

Ruger came out with this model a few years ago supposedly to satisfy complaints that their employees were shooting anything but Ruger for target matches.

    Nice rifles.

Nice indeed! I'd like to get one but I'm not real fond of the stock (minor issue). Me and "thumb holes" don't really get along, but that would be an easy fix. If I ever see one at a decent price that I can afford, I'll snatch it up.

The two best powders for .223 that I've found are Varget and CFE223. CFE will clean the copper out of the barrel, though it's a little more sooty than Varget.

I haven't heard of the CFE223. How does perform besides being sooty?

    Very well for me.
I'm using it exclusively for .223 now.
Seems to run a bit cooler. Brass comes out hot, but doesn't burn my skin if one lands on me.
    Unlike some powders.
