Some of the posts in this https://www.texasguntalk.com/threads/the-great-bbq-review-thread.86999/ got me to thinking about all the foods that have unnecessary sugar added.

Tater salad, I've had way too many that have tons of added sugar or corn syrup. Tater salad should NEVER have sweetness.

Coleslaw, again it should NEVER have added sweetness.

BBQ sauce. Unless it's a honey or brown sugar sauce it shouldn't be sweet. Good God almighty. I like bbq sauce on a burger or on pulled pork. It's also good on a chopped brisket sammich. But that's about it. I don't need a damn sugar bomb in my BBQ sauce.

Since you started this topic, Bacon should never have sugar added when cooking it either. Not brown or otherwise.

A little brown sugar can be nice for a certain flavor but if you're just going for a regular bacon flavor I agree it's unnecessary.

People who add maple syrup or brown sugar to bacon needs to have their arse kicked.
The only thing reasonably acceptable to be added to bacon in the pack, it cracked pepper

Use Dr Pepper as your sauce base. It can be a mix of Shiner beer and Dr Pepper. Adding white vinegar and/or yellow mustard will cut the sweet and give it a twang.

I don't know about not doing some candied bacon as an appetizer.

I don't do maple syrup in BBQ. I don't live in Canada.
