What's the story of that flag, my friend?
While Texas Independence Day is officially recognized on 2 March when in 1836 the Republic formally declared its independence from Mexico; on this date in history (21 April) please take a few moments to remember the Battle of San Jacinto, the final and decisive battle of the Texas Revolution!
Led by General Samuel Houston, the Texan Army of 910 men engaged and defeated General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican army of 1,360 men in a fight that lasted just 18 minutes.
The Mexican Army suffered 650 men killed, 208 wounded and another 300 captured.
The Texas Army lost 11 killed or fatally wounded, and 30 wounded.
Santa Anna, also the President of Mexico, and General Martín Perfecto de Cos both escaped during the battle.
Santa Anna was captured the next day (22 April) and Cos two days later on 24 April.
After being held for about three weeks as a prisoner of war, Santa Anna signed the peace treaty which dictated the Mexican army leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country.
Houston became a national celebrity and the Texans' rallying cries from events of the war, "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad" became etched into Texan history and legend.
