Since picking up the Star BM I've been in love with it. It shoots great and it has that classic 1911 style look to it. I've been wanting to completely rebuild this pistol for a while and after doing some research and ordering what few replacement parts there are for it, I'm finally ready. So here I go, I'm going to see if I can slick this baby up.

First off, the before shots, she's seen a lot of duty over the years and it shows. Not much finish left on it

Too bad they had to remove the Spanish service insignias.

I've learned that the numeral located on the right front of the trigger guard is the year of manufacture. In this case it would be 1979. Note SPAIN stamped underneath the number.

Now to start the disassembly process beginning with the slide. To remove the firing pin you'll to need to drift the rear sight out. There is an alignment mark to simplify the reinstallation process.

The firing pin and extractor pins can be driven out from underneath the slide once the rear sight is removed. Be careful when removing the extractor, there is a small uncaptured spring pushing out on it from the side of the slide.

A good reason to completely disassemble this pistol, it's filthy! I can't believe it even functioned. The firing pin had so much gunk in it that I had to push it our from the other side with a piece of wire.

Now to start sanding the slide down. In addition to removing the milled out area I'm also going to remove the arsenal number and all of the tooling marks left over from manufacture.

And here are the first results.

And before I get too far along, here are the parts I'll be using and where you can get them. Some of these were hard to find so I hope this will help out fellow Star BM owners.

For bluing I'm going to try a technique I saw on youtube. If it actually works I'll pass it on. If it doesn't work then I'll take it to a gun shop and have it professionally done. I hope to have the entire slide assembly finished by the end of the weekend so I should know if it's going to work by then

    Red Army,

Looks like a good/fun project. - I'd buy one or 2 of the Star pistols, if there was a way to fit the BM with a LH safety.

The air brush on the peg board looks like a gravity fed Iwata. I don't recognize the other one.(Brown and chrome)

That's the thing to have to spray some ceracoat or duracoat. Expensive little tool. Real deal airbrush.

    I'm in too.

I'm hoping the aftermarket will step in and make some parts for these pistols. I've seen quite a few people with them at the ranges so there is a market out there.

Yep it's an Iwata HP-CS, a very durable and trouble free airbrush. It's about $150.00 but I guarantee it will last a lifetime if taken care of. The other brush is a Paasche media blaster, you can spray aluminum oxide with it. I've found that it replicates the bead blast finish found on stainless Colt 1911's almost perfectly. It's a little fussy but it works and it was cheap too.

Never sprayed Ceracoat but I spray a lot of models. Been building models since I was a kid, still do, I'm just a bigger kid now lol.

I got mine at my gun dealer in Hurst, Kentucky Windage. I'd imagine that your gun dealer could pick up one for you. Current prices are $236.00 for good condition and $281.00 for very good condition. I bought the very good condition option, the barrel looks like new inside, the frame, not so much.

Dude, you're robbing us. We'd enjoy seeing the model building too. Folks around really enjoy the specialised threads of the DIY.

Next Model, hook us up! That looks awesome.

Lol, I'll have to post up my PT-Boat build in that section then, I've been trying to finish it for over a year. Haven't had much time lately, once winter starts and I get bored I'll pick it up again.

    To All,

EPOXY APPLIANCE PAINT comes in several colors, is EASY to apply, looks GREAT & STAYS ON well.
(You may also look at the paint that is made/sold for finishing BBQ pits & exhaust systems for engines. = That stuff is CHEAP & also works acceptably.)

    Charlie,

Fwiw, the Star BM pistols in NRA Good/VG condition are available for 199.oo from www.classicfirearms.com - PHONE: 704-774-1102.
(IF you can talk to "Brad", he's both a NICE guy & HELPFUL, too.)

As of today, 01NOV18, Classic Firearms has more than 2,000 pieces in G/VG condition.

The BM pistol is NOT (sadly) C&R.

I had one of those back in the 70s. Mine had an alloy frame I think Called the Star Light or Star Lite..maybe. Worked good. Traded it off for a whole house full of used furniture to a city cop in the used Furniture business. The gun magaziens all said it was a good one but tended to be delicate..which never did figure out why they said that. Stars were general considered to be a notch above Llama and the other made in Spain guns.
