Shilen is having a small swap meet today that includes a tour of the shop. I though I would share some pictures with y'all because it was pretty cool.

Let's start with some barrel blanks.

Here we have a barrel getting it's cherry popped so to speak. Behind him another barrel is being reamed. The drill bit is pushed through, the reamer is pulled.

Here is the drill bit he is using.

Here is where the rifling is swagged in.

Here is the button that does the work. It is pulled through with a hydraulic ram.

This is what sets the pitch. It twists the barrel as the button is being pulled through.

Here is another shot of the machine. It's the only one they have ever used to rifle barrels here.

Here is where the barrels are lapped.

Here is the QC area. The barrels are checked with an air gauge to make sure they are a consistent size all the way through, unless you order a tapered rimfire barrel.

Then the are checked with a boroscope to see is they need more lapping. Their barrels are checked again if the shop does the threading, chambering, or contouring.

The swap meet outside was just like a small gun show but with cooler shit and no beef jerky or Chinese crap.

    These guys even showed up.

Awesome ... don't know if I've ever laid eyes on a better post.
Seeing how things are made never gets old.
"Method engineering", the old definition, used in factories of yore to get the job done ... can't beat it.
    Thanks for posting!

If you're into that world, the annual Shilen swap meet is not to be missed.

The swap meet is 3/23 this year. I plan on going again.

Thanks for the reminder. Despite my past purchases from Shilen, for some reason I don't get email updates.

Unfortunately, this brings to mind a sad thought. Do I want to sell my Wichita collection? I'm willing to bet this is one of the 4 or 5 events in the U.S. annually where I might have a chance of getting back a decent percentage of what I (over)spent.

Some serious mental cogitation is in the offing for me...
