I've been sorting. Russ the last few days and got to thinking is sorting by brand really that important for plinking ammo?

I know volumes and all can be different but with a load on the safer side of things is it really necessary?

If the cases weigh the same. You can consider them having an equal volume.

Military brass is thicker and has a hair less volume.

So sorting civilian brass with civilian brass is ok.

    Military to military is ok.

Mixing military with civilian. Not so much.

Equal weight doesn’t mean equal volume. Way too many variables to make that assumption.

    School me as to why.

Military brass is thicker. The cases weigh more. There's more brass in the base(head) area. Thicker walls. Therefore, the internal volume is different then a thinner walled civilian case.

Civilian cases are made with less brass. Compare the weight between a 5.56 WWB case to a NATO 5.56 case. Outside dimensions are the same. The internal isn't.

Thank you. I never load max loads (haven't found a need to), I do like accuracy, but I've never been convinced that all the infinite processes, etc. can make the difference. The "shooter" makes more difference than all the components, IMO.

Military ammo is good for a 3-4" spread. No matter how hard you try. Military rounds do their own thing.

I have thousands of GGG NATO 5.56. Steel core, unmarked. 3-4" shot groups is as good as it gets with those.

And "none" of the military ammo is hand loaded, correct?

My understanding it's the steel core making it less accurate. If the steel core isn't perfectly in the center of the bullet. It causes an unbalanced projectile as it spins. Making it 3-4" ammo.

Understandable, but I don't load steel cases, and don't know of anyone that does. What my main point is that the differences between empty brass cases after they have been trimmed is "almost" unmeasureable with the equipment used by 90% or more hand loaders.

I do it. Then match them by weight. LC is all over the map by year. If you want precision shooting, pony up and buy precision brass.

It's all 223/5.56 brass. I have it sorted but some of it I don't have enough to make a batch so I figured I'd try to just mix it with similar brass. I don't have a ton but I filled 2 gallon zip locks and could maybe fill another if I combined the rest

Most will be used for plinking, some of the "better" LC/FC (probably) I'll use for 75gr hotter loads for 600yds.
