Can’t speak for 22lr but I have one in 22 mag. Accuracy is meh. It’s fine. Light weight handy gun though. It makes sense to me in 22 mag but for 22 lr I would just stick to a 10/22

Anyone have input or experience with the ruger American 22lr? Preferred barrel length and why?

    Thanks in advance
Got a 17hmr RA it shoots moa at 100 if you do your part. I agree with Sam7, just get a 10/22. If you plan on dumping money into a 10/22 for barrel, stock & trigger I would just buy a Magnum Research Magnum Lite.

The magpul hunter stock supports the 10/22 receiver extremely well. My rifle got pretty accurate.

I have two of the Predator version. Wish the barrel was a little thicker but it works. Haven’t dialed it in on paper but have it close enough to take out raccoons and armadillos.

I bought it because it takes the 10/22 mags, which I have plenty, and stock was OD Green. A 10/22 can be quiet suppressed, this is even more so.

I have one. I love it and it is significantly more accurate than my 10/22. Ruger did a good job on them taking 10/22 mags. The only thing I've done to mine, was some trigger work.

I bought the compact version for my 8 year old grandson. It's still a little too long and heavy for him yet. It won't be long till he grows into it though. I shoot it when I want something different from my 10/22. Using the same mag was a good idea.

18" Heavy Barrel (comes threaded with thread protector). The 18" barrel has ample weight and balances the rifle nicely. I shoot NRL.22 Open class with this rifle.

I have the carbine with a threaded barrel. With a can the loudest part on a 10/22 is the bolt cycling. With the bolt gun it's hollywood quiet. Very accurate little gun. I say get one.

I have an 18” .22lr, it started failing to extract after a few thousand rounds. I reprofiled the extractor making it sharper and its working again. It appears to be a common problem from net research and Ruger sent me out a new extractor and positioned spring a few weeks ago, which I am keeping as a back up. Accuracy is acceptable for varminting. SK rifle match, CCI standard, CCI suppressor and SK standard plus provide reasonable accuracy.

Shot my friend's .22 last Sunday and I have one in .17HMR

    They are solidly built.
    Pricing is reasonable.

    Ruger rotary magazines are industry-best.

Ruger barrels all seem to be quite good.
That .22 was shooting 1.5 MOA with several ammo varietals.
My .17 was shooting sub-MOA with the CCI 15.5grain stuff

Triggers on Rugers are all just OK and a touch heavy for my liking.

initially I was a bit disappointed as the rear sight was a Williams circle in a circle was not able to adjust elevation.

I purchased rear William's red adjustable rear sights.

Things are much better . Super tight group 25 yards with mixed bulk ammo.

I was able to take it out to 80 to 100 yards with relative ease. Picking off small pieces of wood 16 ounce bottles etc.

    The trigger is super nice!

I used one of the bx 25 round mags and a GSG 100 round mag.

    This little gun is fun.

When the wind calms down I will dial In at 50 yards.

    Eventually he a primary arms acss 22lr 6 x 24

    Great scope for the 22lr

Glad you like it. Your experience mirrors mine. If you want to mess with your trigger - WARNING - you can remove the main trigger spring and only leave the spring on the safety blade. Makes a very light trigger out of it.

    Shot mine again last Sunday.

It's the 17HMR with the sexy blued shiny cold hammer forged barrel.

I had an ancient fixed 12x Luepold external target turret scope with the razor-thin reticle gathering dust.
    Mounted it. Zeroed it.
Not what I'd use for all around plinking but that 40+ year old old-school bench rest Luepold is as sharp as the Hubble telescope.

If there is such a thing as "boringly accurate" it would make the cut.
At 100 yards it just put the little 17gr CCI projectiles within a 0.5 to 1 centimeter of where I aimed every time!

Like most rimfire guns your requisite quest is to find an ammo variant that it favors.

Ruger, in barrel manufacture, has done their part.
