Been seeing some deals lately and started wondering what the next rifle should be. Been wanting a 7.62/.308 but can't decide between "AR-10" and M1A.

    What are you guy's thoughts?

    thequinessentialman,

May I suggest an alternative?? =I would pick a Type 1 BM59 in 7.62 NATO, built with NM parts.
    (For a multi-use/tactical & individually-owned longarm, I find the BM59 to be superior to the M1A or the AR10.)

    Tbhawk,

IF I had my choice it would be a Garand converted to 7.62x51, to use M14 mags & with NO other change. = BM 59 mags are $$$$$$$ & harder to find.
(BMB offered to convert every Garand in the US inventory to that configuration for 18.oo each, btw.)

I have one of each and like them both for different reasons.

The M1A is an NM configuration and it a dream to shoot through it's iron sites, and looks great next to it's older brother the M1 Garand.

The AR-10 is a great shooter. With it's scope, it'll hit anything it can see. But it is a HEAVY rifle.

You can have Shuff cut it for BM59 or M14 magazines.

    ZX9RCAM,

IF the BM59 magazines had been as inexpensive then as they are now, I would have selected the BM59.
(Perhaps Eli can tell us were all the sudden pile of BM59 mags came from, that seem to be quite numerous in 2019. - Btw, Eli is the most knowledgeable person, whom I know, on the BM59.)

I should think that 5 total BM59 mags should be sufficient for my uses, given one in the rifle & 4 loaded spares on my web-belt, short of a major war.. - I would think that few emergencies would last long enough or be so intense that 100 rounds of 7.62NATO wouldn't be plenty.

    Eli,

Offhand, do you know how much that they charge to do the conversion from M1 Garand to BM59??
(Unless it's sold very recently, I know where is a GREAT H&R Garand barreled receiver, up north of Waco, that is on a "Bubba-ed" Garand with a "sporterized" stock & that is/was CHEAP, so being "BM59-ed" won't damage it's collectability.)

Realistically, an AR-10 is just an upsized AR-15. You'll already be familiar with it, if you own a 15, it's also lighter than most 7.62/.308 rifles. But it doesn't have that old school "wow" factor. I'd personally go with the AR-10. I've been eyeing those new Brownells AR-10 Retros. They're a bit different than most AR-10/15, but they do sport a certain aesthetic.

Prices start at $500, and go up from there: http://shuffsparkerizing.com/services/mag-fed-garand/
Shuff did the receiver on my rifle you saw before, I assembled it myself. Runs great, I trust for any purpose.

IIRC AR-10 preceeded the AR-15. When the 7.62x51 was rejected by the Army, Stoner downsized it to the AR-15 in 5.56x45.
