I will say, the economy was in the crapper when I graduated high school so everyone went to a junior college. Before the first semester ended, 3 of my buddies flunked out and decided to join the Navy. I wasn't flunking but also didn't like short hair back then (I wear a #1 cut now) so I stayed in college. All 3 enlisted in January and it did teach the discipline and motivation. They all left after their minimum service years and did very well afterwards. None of them were seal material but it did make them grow up.

One of my nephews signed up and made it 2-3 weeks into boot camp and then made himself so sick they threw him out. That's what his mom says. He won't talk about it.
I told his mom and dad their kid was a pussy. They didn't talk to me for over a year but after their friends told them the same thing they came around to accept the fact.
The kid has a lazy eye and I just figured they wouldn't even accept him like that. They must be pretty desperate these days.

I can relate, took me 7 years to get to that point though.

Some 20 years back, I hosted the recently-retired Army Colonel who had been C/O of the US Army Sniper School for the prior 2 or 3 years; on my boat for an offshore fishing trip out of SPI.

The Army does all U S Sniper training, including USMC, FBI, Luftwaffe, USCG, USAF, USN, etc.

He told of all sorts of FAKE ‘Snipers’’.

Since then, I’ve run across a few, myself.

Unfortunately MOS can dictate how that went. Also, first term can be pretty crappy anyway, junior enlisted can be no fun in some MOSs.
