Hello again my friends from the JOIDES Resolution. We are on our way from Hong Kong to Punta Arenas, Chile (The southern tip of South America). We are a little over a month into our transit and we have about 15 days to go. I'd thought I'd share something noteworthy. We just reached Point Nemo. Anyone heard of it? That's right, it is the location where they filmed Finding Nemo.

No, actually it is an oceanic pole of inaccessibility. It is the point that is furthest from any land mass (about 1600 miles actually) on Earth. If the space station were to fly overhead, we would be closer to them than anyone on land. It is also a major space vehicle cemetery/junkyard. Point Nemo is the target point for decommissioned satellites and space stations. Its name is from a character from Jules Vern's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", Captain Nemo, a Latin name which itself translates to “no one.”

So hello from Point Nemo. Hopefully no one will be decommissioning any space craft while we are here.

    Good luck & safe travels.
One thing i always thought was cool along my travels, are the dolphins riding the bow waves.

Nope, not on those dates for me.

Bummer, well maybe some other time.

I was excited, earlier last year there was a possibility of the JR making port in Galveston. I was going to invite family and friends to come tour the ship. Unfortunately that fell through. The closest we are going to get to Texas is San Diego. :(

I don’t think the JR can reach San Diego. No water

We entered the straits. It is foggy out so the pictures aren't that great. Maybe get some better ones later.

Here are some pictures taken a few hours later.

I tried to post this yesterday but couldn't get the pictures to upload. We are currently parked at a fueling depot which is part of a small refinery down here. We have bunkered 637 thousand gallons (2556 metric tons) of artic blend fuel in preparation for the next expedition. We are going to leave here in a few hours and go out to anchorage to wait for our berth in Punta Arenas to clear. Once it is clear we will go in and then it will be beer time.
