Obviously box cutters are a bigger threat to planes since they have a history of actually doing it.

I just exhausted my Google-fu skills and couldn't find a single reported incident of a civilian bringing down a plane with a .223 round.

If I were so inclined to "take out" an airplane, an AR-15 would be at the bottom of my list. I would prefer any high caliber bolt action Remington mod 700, and even then it would be all kinds of luck to hit something on the plane capable of crashing it. Odds are your going to jail for a long time for doing nothing but putting holes in a plane.
