I have your solution. 458 SOCOM AR, worn on your shoulder via a single point harness, loaded with 300g HPs. Deadly, and you don't have to get within pistol range.

If I wanted to carry rifle, my 45-70 is more than sufficient. I'm interested in what blackhawk 45 Colt should be loaded with. Thanks

I do have 357 revolver and lever gun. Bought HSM 180 gr bear load for them. For 45 colt on order now is HSM 325 gr +P bear load. I'll order some of the hard cast 255 gr cartridges soon.
    Thanks to all for sharing.
Y'all and your suggestions are most appreciated.
    Thank you.

It is quite common to perform a headshot on domestic hogs with a .22 lr when preparing them for slaughter.

The only issue I ever experienced involved hollow point bullets. Solid nose projectiles penetrate bone while hollow points tend to expand upon impact.
How many hogs have you shot in the head with a .22 hollow point and had the round expand without penetrating the skull?

I tend to carry a similar gun during deer season. A ruger blackhawk bisley also chambered in 45 LC. I keep it loaded w/3 winchester silvertip hollow points and 3 snake shot rounds. I've never had to use it but certainly feel like it's plenty of gun for the purpose. The silvertip is a 225gr bullet loaded to standard pressure.

The 1000 fps loads listed in the first few replies are what you want IMHO. I prefer Keith swc boolits myself and Power Pistol propellant. Very similar to a 44 Special with Keith boolits and same propellant around 1050 fps. Very potent but easy to shoot quickly and accurately due to very tame recoil.

Was it a LR or a Short?

Shot properly in the head, front center, the slug will be laying on the back of the tongue when dressed out. Got that from my German FIL. Even saw him do it.

I have personally seen a large hog (not feral) take a .22 LR right above the eyes and it only made him mad. 30.06 did the trick, though.

Then what you saw was a poor shot. Hog lowered his head at the last second, shooter flinched, bullet had no powder ( although I have killed them in traps with a CB round)

I have shot thousands in the head with a .22. All have dropped. None got mad.

Here is one that did something squirrelly. She came out of the brush while I was shooting her offspring in a trap.

Head shot at about 5 yards. Dropped at my feet. I am glad I relieved myself before going to the trap.
