Suppose I find a 7.5" 300 AAC upper that I want to buy for future installation on an AR 5.56 pistol that I don't have yet. I own several other AR Carbines/Rifles with 16" and 18" barrels. The question is the legality of possessing an upper of that length without owning a pistol lower or a stamped SBR to attach it to.

I plan on getting a complete AR 5.56 pistol in the near future. If I also purchase the 300 AAC upper so that I have the option of using either on the pistol lower, then I will have at least one very short upper in my possession that is not attached to anything, but could hypothetically be mounted on a carbine lower. Of course, I wouldn't, but am I looking at a potential problem here, or over thinking it?

Just buy an AR pistol the same time you get the upper. As long as there is a legal configuration you can use the upper with and you never put it on a receiver with a stock you should be fine.

I would buy it and not think twice.

But if you are skeered the man is gonna com getcha, buy a stripped lower for $30 and that is your pistol build.

I say buy the upper. Then either keep it locked away or find a cheap stripped lower like others have said and put it on the striped lower.

    Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Anyway I thought that was a drug warrant. And you hate druggies.

It was a drug warrant, based on the claims of a confidential informant. After the smoke cleared and the bodies were dragged away, no drugs were found. Also, the weapons HPD chief Avocado claimed the couple fought police with weren't found. A quick sweep under the rug occurred immediately, and the story was allowed to fade away.

Except, NO confidential informant actually was involved.

Seriously? Last time I read about it they were still claiming an informant had given them the info, but they had admitted the injured cops were shot by other cops. So...basically the SWAT boys got bored and decided to shoot some stuff up?

Well, they claimed an informant made a buy from them, but that was later determined to be a lie.
It is also believed that the drugs found there were planted.

Good lord...what kind of clown show is Avocado running? And the chances that any cops will be charged with homicide, or lose their jobs, or have a sternly worded letter added to their personnel file, or even get a disappointed sigh from anyone they answer to...is zero.

Can get an AR15 pistol buffer tube pretty cheap and build or buy a pistol lower pretty cheap. That solves what your intent was if the pistol upper and pistol lower are connected.

30 dollar Anderson at Primary or (right now) an Aero Precision for 59 bucks.

Saw a KAK Pistol lower finish kit that had everything for 85 bucks.
