Has anyone (but me) actually taken the time to read the books?

I have not. I didn't want to confuse the story as told in the books with the story of the TV show.
AFAIK, the timeline of the TV show has gone beyond the published books. Martin has shared with the producers the basic plot points and how each character winds up in the books; it's up to the TV show writers to, essentially, make it up as they go along and hit those goals.

Also, there are two books left in the series that have yet to be finished. The TV show should conclude before the last of them is published.

Given all that, I'm a bit glad I haven't read the books. I'm getting one consistent vision of the story and not being sidetracked by my disagreements with the TV writers over how they're handling things.

I feel sure, however, that when the final book is published I'll buy a box set and binge-read the entire series.

She already knew he was going to die anyway, it was prophesied to her. She saw it coming decades earlier and had all the time in the world to cope with it.
That wasn't the way I understood that. What you say is true, yes, but I was under the impression that due to her inexperience as a youth and her hubris as an adult, she didn't understand the prophecy, didn't take it to heart, and would only realize what it truly meant after her children were dead.

Perhaps not, though. She may have consigned her children to their fates after Joffrey died. After that, she was obviously afraid for, even pessimistic about, her daughter's longevity. Even before that, she was complicit with hunting down the Baratheon bastards. But I still maintain that it wasn't until Joffrey died that she even started to accept that her children could possibly fall victim to any misfortune foretold by some weird, old, lower-class person in a tent.

So is the revival of this old thread where we're going to discuss the final season of GoT? Or should I close it and start a new one?

I don't see a reason to start a new one.
    Agreed.

So, last night was a good one, though sometimes it just seemed like they were checking off a laundry list to show as many characters on screen as possible. For example, Podrick is in the procession to Winterfell...then suddenly he's standing behind Sansa in formation as Dany is introduced to her. We get it; Podrick is back and he's where the action is. They didn't need to club us over the head with that info.

So, is Jon actually Azor Ahai and will he plunge a sword through the heart of Melisandre to set it alight with the fire of R'Hllor, The Lord of Light, thus allowing Jon to kill the Night King? Or do ya'll favor some of the more "out there" theories about where the story is going?

Personally, I was surprised to find out that the army of Wights is so close to Winterfell. Upon reflection, it makes sense, though. The series can't conclude with the final battle between the living and the dead because that would leave the whole political mess in Westeros, the driving conflicts of the series, unresolved. So the Night King has to be dealt with, one way or another, well before the end. After all, we need a whole episode to celebrate Cersei finally getting what she deserves, right?

Or should I just say "Good episode", leave it at that, and not go down this rabbit hole? :)

I tried to watch this show, but couldn't stand it.

Found it too far out there for me, but I don't like Babylon 5 or whatever it was called either...too weird for me.

I watched the first few seasons but lost interest for some reason. I loved the violence and the hot naked chicks and the horrible character deaths.

Awesome start to the season. Love the new opening. Glad John found out the truth early on. Epic battle in episode 3, then we get 3 more episodes of who knows what. Then gotta wait for the prequel.

Yes, the series strays from the books and lack the depth. Having said that, the GOT series is enjoyable and one of the very few shows that I actually watch. (I watch the episodes after they’re shown on one of several free Russian websites)

I wish someone would make a series out of The Forever War and a few other good sci-fi novels.
