The NRA for all its flaws is still pound for pound tough on Washington D.C. If you don't like the things the NRA does sometimes become a member and vote and change it. Just flapping your gums isn't going to change it. Nothing worse than a person complaining about something but doing nothing to help change it.

You get lots and lots of phone calls. NRA credit cards, NRA wine, NRA insurance, NRA toilet paper, NRA NRA. Son's of bitches just cannot leave you alone even after you politely opt out of their non-stop infomercial shit.
I am a member of some of the other groups and they send out mailers too. I could use some of that toilet paper.

I was a member of the NRA for many years. I dropped my membership when I had finally had enough and saw that there was nothing I could do to change it.

The only way that it will ever change for the better is when they lose enough members to hurt their bank account. Then there might be a positive change.

When you change it so that they are actually doing something good let me know. LOL

For Texas, that's the Texas State Rifle Association. We maintain a lobbyist in Austin to help monitor and update us on what's going on, as well as rallying "friendly" legislators to help head off unfavorable bills, or support good ones. It's an ongoing fight - but never more so than this year.

I'm NRA Benefactor, and TSRA Defender. Neither group is perfect, but I can assure you that as a member of the TSRA board, they try with everything they have to get things right. I encourage EVERY Texan to join TSRA.
I'm a Golden Eagle with the NRA and a Life Member of TSRA.

However, I'm actually glad that Alice is no longer the sole full-time gun lobbyist in Texas. Rachel Malone, the full-time GOA lobbyist, is doing a hell of a job rallying the grassroots to get involved, too.

I sincerely hope Alice will come around to not viewing Rachel as competition. No one is talking openly about it but I get the impression she sort of resents having someone else playing in the field she once had all to herself. I hope I am completely wrong. As soon as I see Malone and Tripp working together on something, anything, I'll feel a lot better.

Since you're a member of the TSRA board, I encourage you to encourage Alice to foster a good working relationship with Rachel.

The discussion has been had - my impression, though (in fairness to Alice), is that she's a "show me" type. She's sitting back and watching to ensure that Rachel is going to be up to the task without other agendas.

Last time they called me I used the opportunity to let them know I would not be sending them another cent while Marion Hammer, LaPierre, and any of their cronies were still part of the organization. They haven't called back since...

They called my wife, who is from new jersey and very abrasive (big surprise there), and she ranted about bumpstocks and how "lapierre can eat sh*t and die" to the lady on the phone. Pretty sure they will never call again

I’m now looking into TSRA. Where’s the best place to read up on this group? I’ve found their website.

Bottom line - TSRA is a gun-centric group that promotes gun ownership, hunting, target shooting, etc - there's more to us than a single legislative focus. Sometimes, that gets you lost in the forest, but we try to watch ALL aspects of things that can affect ANY legal use of firearms, as well as support competitive shooting sports. Think of a NRA that focuses on Texas issues only, without the twice-weekly fundraising mailers and phone calls.....lol

I joined a number of years ago. BHO's admin kept me going. Now, I am rethinking, what has the NRA done for us lately. Also, all of the internal problems coming into view. What have they done for us? What rights restored as per the Constitution? I am in the mind to locate a better organization that fights for our rights and wins.

You may want to have a look at the GOA.

Take a look at the Second Amendment Foundation. They have brought more successful legal challenges against gun laws in the last decade than anyone else.

I support them through the Amazon Smile program. Got an email just today that said Amazon made a quarterly contribution to Second Amendment Foundation for just over $10k. Makes me Smile to know they had to cut that check.

I've been using the Amazon Smile thing for GOA this go'round. Just like you, makes me smile knowing that they cut that check to a Gun Rights organization.

When the NRA fought to maintain their multi-generational support of Harry Reid, was when I parted company with them. They claim they are a single issue group and Reid was good for things like public ranges. The harm Reid has done to America and his solid support for Socialist issues far outweighed any good he may have done for gun owners in only his home State.
I didn't part ways with them, but I did stop making contributions to the ILA side. We lived in WA state for many years. A few years back, the anti-gun crowd got an initiaive on the ballot (I-594) to REQUIRE an FFL on all transfers, even private sales. They had some big money supporters and they did a lot of mailings to our house in support of I-594. They were slimy. They made them each look like they came from a different group, but if you read the fine print it was the same meddling billionaires. Then they got a NRA Llife member to do an endorsement ad.
What did the NRA do to fight off this insidious bill? All I ever saw was they ran a "NO" bumper sticker in the American Rifleman. Sure it was something, but amounted to preaching to the choir. I expected them to AT LEAST run a TV ad refuting that life member. I saw ZERO on TV against the bill. No glossy mailer (we probably got six or seven from the pro crowd).
The initiative passed. You couldn't even GIVE a gun to a family member without running afoul of the law.
Every time they called me after that, I asked them why they had done so little to keep that crap from passing. A few took time to argue their case. Most are volunteers and just said "yeah, that sucks". I told them to pass it along up the chain. I had thought they would be there if needed, but was sadly disappointed.
Now, I know they do plenty on the large scale. I am still a member and would recommend them to any shooter. They need to figure out how to do more at the grassroots level, though. These laws get passed one at a time, in one state after another, and pretty soon our rights are gone.
End of my rant for today.
Short answer: it's worth the membership just for the American Rifleman magazine. It's well done and they cover lots of guns I might never have looked at otherwise.
    Party on.

I'm a patron member of the NRA. I'm a member for the same reason I have donated to the Trump campaign. You have to put-up or shut-up, and I believe the erosion if the 2A will be the downfall of this nation if we don't stand firmly for it.
