I'm staying in So. Austin while working on a house purchased in Lockhart. I walk my dog in the A.M. hours (4:00-4:30) and now have spotted a coyote twice. First time it stayed about 75 yards away at the entrance of a greenbelt. Today it came out of the greenbelt stayed 50 yards away. It stayed it's distance but started up the street towards us. We made it home without incident. Would like to hear someone else's experience(s).

Yes, have dealt with them here and in Cali.
Keep your dog by you on leash and just shout at them. They aren't wolves and will back off.

Remember to keep your dog in a leash. they are known to use females to lure dogs and then will pack jump them.

About 30 years ago some buddy's and I were fishing south of the Padre Island National Seashore in a remote area only accessible by 4 wheel drive. I think the place is called redfish pass. I bet someone in here can confirm or correct me on this. I had left a fishing pole with bait on the hook behind our tent. It was about 3am and we were drinking beer when we heard the drag line start hissing. We ran to the back and grabbed the rod as it slid thru the sand unable to see in the dark what was hooked to it. I slowly started to real in the line and was getting a pretty good fight from the other end. After a few minutes of this we could see a full grown coyote with the hook firmly in his mouth. First and only time I caught one on a rod and reel with 80lb test.

What is the rest of the story? Did you give your rod and reel to the yote?

The coyotes out there have adapted. I have a buddy that’s a Ranger out there, and he says it’s extremely common for one to show his face and little fluffy chases him into the sand dunes and is never seen again. That’s how they feed themselves now.

Enjoying the stories & suggestions. Karlac; a great hawk with prey photo. I also subscribe to the practice of, "You let me be, I'll let you be", until the line gets crossed. I know this is the time of year when coyotes mate/breed & the male brings food to the den. I can't be certain if it's the same coyote or not. I knew before seeing a coyote that there was evidence of them because of all the missing cat & small dog flyers on the utility poles.

Zincwarrior, now you know why I bought a house in Lockhart. There's many many reasons but mainly because Austin outgrew me & is becoming a city I don't recognize. Truly sad.

I worked in Tucson one summer. Every evening walking back to the motel room there were half dozen or more coyotes roaming around the parking lot. They did not bother anyone, but the sight of them kept me moving on.

Thanks for welcome. I use to go by "j.r.flaco" but I couldn't get it back. I enjoy talking with fellow Texans & Texanas even if you weren't born here as long as you love our Texas. Lyle Lovett said it best.

Here in a DFW suburb, I have seen them in my front yard. They run the drains and pop up to get a snack (mostly cats from the chatter on Nextdoor). They live about two blocks from my house. I've seen them in the creek there, and in the adjacent yards near the creek.

I have killed them in the wild, but have not bothered them in my hood. That could change at any moment.

Around 1980, I was hired to photograph a hunt club. The english type , riding to the hounds. They didn't chases but coyotes.

It's hunt day about 7 am, the hunters are showing up and unloading their horses, saddling them. across the field I spot two dogs sitting and watch7ng.

I asked one of the hunters about it and was told they were the subject of the hunt. Apparently the coyotes enjoyed these hunts too.

They never got caught because they could run across rimrock to lose the hounds any time they wanted.

A shot of the hunt master with 18 or so Jack Russell Terriers all in the creek, drinking water became a cover for the Huntsman magazine.
