    Gunz are icky.
The Doc had to use a hammer and chisel to get one of mine out! I'm NOT making that up either.
After that nightmare I just left the top two alone.

OK, I'll add my impacted lower wisdom teeth story.

Took what seemed a lifetime for the dentist using a hammer & chisel with the help of a female assistant who used some type of suction device to remove the broken tooth bits and gore while the dentist banged away. This fun time happened in early 70's.

He injected novocaine and it worked, so while I didn't 'exactly' feel pain, keeping my mouth open for as long as it took and feeling the pressure of the hammer blows was creepy as hell.

He had to break up both lower wisdom teeth in order to remove them, but the uppers were smoothly yanked out.

    Fun times.

Oh, btw, the dentist was a great guy.

I was very poor when this was needed to be done.

I asked if he would let me pay in installments monthly until the cost was covered.

He didn't bat an eye and immediately said yes.

    No paperwork.

Trust and one as he learned he could rely on. I never missed a payment. It took me a year a half to pay it off.

Sadly, this great guy died of a brain tumor.

I really admired and respected this man.

I'm driving home from another late night surgery. I had to do an urgent surgery on a patient screwed up by a local dental chain. This happens way too often.

    Hope it all worked out.
    That sounds scary....
    Pt will probably be fine.

My wife is worried that I'll sound like some kinda weirdo cause I made a post about it on FB. It pisses me off when patients are injured through blatant mismanagement. Enough people suffer through unintended complications. We don't need to create unnecessary ones on top of that.

I don't know the answer except to say if you need oral surgery see an oral surgeon. That doesn't help if you need some other type of dentistry. Use a specialist where you can.

This is a generalization and not directed towards you, but .... A large issue with the medical field is the lack of information available to patients to make informed decisions. The medical field HATES it when patients uses Google to try and learn, but on the flip side of the coin will do everything possible to withhold information. God forbid you ask a care provider a question, not only do you fear what new obscure billing code will show up on the itemized bill you have to fight to even get, but how dare you question your care from the 'expert'? A simple "how much will this procedure cost" question will not be answered. The lack of trust in providers is apparent when the "is this procedure necessary" question has to be asked. You often can't even see a specialist until you go through a general practitioner, and then you end up in a situation like you dealt with last night. The medical field is a minefield.

I had two wisdom and an adjacent molar removed. The wisdom tooth pressed against the molar and cracked it. Then, turns out the molar had hooks on the roots.

They tried to pull it, almost took my head off. A couple more x-rays revealed the hooks, so they split the tooth in half and took them one section at a time. My neck was sore for a couple weeks.

This was over 60 years ago and the story given to my mother may have been completely wrong but...
It pisses me off when patients are injured through blatant mismanagement.
...that statement is particularly poignant to me. My mom had a root canal on a severely infected tooth. According to the doctors who eventually removed her left eye, the infection traveled to her eye and destroyed it.

Now, having a one-eyed mom does have it's humorous side but, frankly, I would have preferred if she had had vision in both eyes.

    Nailed it.

The only way you will ever know exactly what something costs is to go out-of-network and see a direct pay doctor. I post all my fees. Patients pay me & can get reimbursed from their insurance if the plan has out-of-network benefits. Surgery Center of OK and TX Freemarket Surgery do the same for other surgeries. A direct primary care doctor near you will do the same.

Regarding getting advice, yeah, I hear ya. Look for a doc on YouTube and/or active on social media. Someone w/ "the heart of a teacher" at Dave Ramsey says.

See, it shouldn't take and xray to figure out you ought to split the tooth.
