I'm fixin' to buy a used truck from an individual. I'm new to TX, so not familiar with the procedure here and want to make sure I don't run into any issues with the tag/registration/tax/title process.

Any procedures or paperwork or anything else I need to be aware of?
Do existing liens (if current owner has a loan on the vehicle) show up on titles?
Is a title, signed and notarized by owner, all I need to get new title and registration in my name? What else will DMV want to see?
Does current owner keep the metal tag plate or does that go with the truck?

    Thanks for any heads up.

First, you get proof of insurance.
    Second, you get inspection.
Third, take proof of insurance, inspection and title to vehicle registration office. They'll ask how much you paid and take their taxes, title and license fees and give you a window sticker and some metal plates.
Your clear title will arrive in the mail a week or so later.

We don’t notarize titles any more. If there’s a lien on the title, the lien holder maintains the title until the lien is released then forwards the title with the release on it to the registered owner.

Otherwise everything is correct. If you have a DD-214 and want specialty plates, you’ll need to bring the DD-214.

If you have 50% or greater VA rating, take a copy of your DD-214 and VA rating letter with you for DV plates. Those plates will stay with you and not transfer with the vehicle.

As a seller, no way I would ever leave my metal plates on a vehicle AFTER the sell. Too many stories about toll booth/road cameras racking up some serious toll charges on plates that have found their way still in use. (Just one less hassle to potentially have to contend with).

Yep, did that once in another state, got a citation for allowing an unlicensed driver to operate MV and a bill for an abandoned vehicle recovery.
Citation was dropped and I just signed over the title to the salvage company, but lesson learned.

DMV has a form you can now fill out and submit online within 30 days when you sell a vehicle.

If you submit a transfer notification within 30 days of sale, the buyer shown becomes the vehicle's presumed owner and may be subject to criminal or civil liability for parking tickets, toll violations, fines or other penalties that occur after the date of sale

Just did this when donating my deceased parents auto to a charity and couldn't get the tags off due to travel time. Worth the few minutes it takes to do.

Did that way back when removing the plates wasn't being done and did a trade-in of the vehicle with a dealer.

Six months later had a ball jerking the chain of one particular govt employee of City of Chicago for weeks over the phone ... she was going to come "all the way to Texas to arrest me", I just kept her telling to bring it on.

I swear she had to be related to Maxine Waters.

karlac, that’s good to know and I’d probably do that TOO. But I think I’d still take the tags off, especially if I was selling to an individual (might be less important if you’re trading in or selling it to a dealership). But with an individual, think I’d want to (en)force the issue to help insure he takes the necessary steps on his end to avoid driving a car without tags and run the risk of a ticket from the cops.

When I bought my last truck I asked about my plates on the trade-in and the dealer said he was required to remove them. Didn't say what he did with them but I filled out the online form and never had a problem. And FWIW I went on the toll road with the buyers plate and guess what, it was registered to me and I got the bill?? New twist.

Yeah, I’d say a dealership/business would be highly motivated to dispose of the old tags correctly so they wouldn’t be sued by the previous owner, should something go wrong.

I used to be an Okie (jealous aintcha?) and in Oklahoma a "green" title is what you want to indicate the vehicle has never been salvaged, totaled, or rebuilt. What's the TX equivalent, a blue title?

Just received a letter today from USAA. My vehicle is paid off and since they were the lien holder they have sent the info to the TxDot. You have to go apply for the title at a state location.
