Are there any open areas in TX or Oklahoma to drive out and set up targets for shooting? I have been researching for days and it looks like there is nothing, but thought id ask any way. From what Ive read it sounds like LBJ grasslands used to allow rifles, but then changed the policy some time ago. Back in CA, up in the mountains there were "designated shooting areas" I was hoping to find some of those here. Thanks.

No, thank God. Not in Texas. Dunno about Oklahoma.
I've seen what shooters do to public property in other states. No one in his right mind would let that happen here without charging you money for the privilege.

Welcome to Texas, and private property.
Oklahoma? No. It's more reservation land than anything.
West Texas is privately held, State and National Parks excluded.
New Mexico has BLM land where nobody cares.

    IDK about any others.

Around El Paso. Anthony gap. For more specific, you may need to ask the guys in that area. There's an open place to shoot here. It's county property and the sheriff asks people to report "any unsafe shooting". That doesn't stop lots of people from shooting there any given day of the week. And not a single person has been charged or even cited as far as I know. I go to an indoor range here where people mag dump like crazy and no one bothers you. I was mag dumping my catamount fury II as fast as I could. They only told me, if I hit other people's targets they can give me another lane.

There used to be an area in Sam Houston National Forest near New Waverly which had an old car and people used that as a shooting area. This was ten years ago when I last been there.

What would be a good range that allows rapid fired? Most shooting ranges have the one second rule. and are quite anal when it comes to rapid fire.

Howdy Ed, welcome to Texas. I know exactly what you are looking for, and there really isn't anything like like that out here. Unlike CA and NV, something like 95% of the land in Texas is privately owned.

The places that end up looking like a landfill tend to be rural areas that experience a lot of traffic, be it a nearby highway or an attraction like a lake or park. They are also not far off the beaten path. Actual remote areas, with no major highways or attractions, are usually fine. Don't know about other states (here included), but 4WD clubs in California often clean up entire sections of forest or desert, all on their own initiative.

Its going to be a change for me coming from California, and shooting on public land to paying a private shooting range. I hate the one second one shoot rule, and the constant cease fire over any dumb thing the range worker feels its not safe.

The ranges here are a bit more expensive too. I ran into one that charged by firearm (fucking ridiculous). It's a mixed bag on what ranges allow rapid fire vs. not allowing it. Not sure where you were in CA, but I have yet to find an outdoor range in the greater Houston area that is as nice as Livermore-Pleasanton Rod & Gun or Sunnyvale Rod & Gun. Or, hell, the open areas in the mountains above Arnold or Springville.

Hope you don't have a fondness for mountains. It's flat out here.

HAHA my friends tell me the same. Texas is Flat.I am glad I joined this forum, I honestly never though about where I would go shooting. Now thinking of it worries me, seems I have a lot to investigate when I relocate next month.
